The fact that almost HALF of the games out on the web are the EXACT same damn thing. Generally they're a Mafia game that ALL use the same source. You know that crappy source that i hate SO much you have
HP EXP Stamina Brave ugh people who make those sites are so stupid, i mean jesus obviously NO ONE is going to really sign up. They fill it all over the topsites. if not that the mafia game that is like on the left is a sidebar then the crimes are like "Pickpocket a kid" ect ect and they ALL HAVE THE SAME WORDS. i mean gosh they have the script yet theyre TOO lazy to actually change a simple word. they could simply rename it "Steal from candy store" for christ sake but it's all the same. I mean people want us to play their games yet what makes it STAND OUT. I mean i know "just don't sign up" but sometimes i don't know if it's going to turn out to be one of those games. Then sometimes theres a fun game, but then the stupid developer is inactive. I dunno, my 2 cents.

I agree with you, these a called game genres. Did you really think that all browser games would be brilliant and totally different from one another, no. They're divided into genres of their own.
The mafia rpgs. The text based strategy games. The village builders. The text based sports management games. The action point games. Heroes of War and Money is different, its a turn based pvp game, you pick your faction, join someone in a 1v1 battle or a group in a 2v2 or 3v3 battle, then the game switches over to battlefield done in flash 8. Its great if you like turn based stuff. http://www.heroeswm.com Pardus is also unique, its a graphical space rpg. Players can actually build buildings from low levels which other players will see on the map. There are different factions, and the usual point a to point b and kill something quests. Its mainly the level of interaction with the game enviroment that attracts people to this. http://www.pardus.at/ Absolute Terror is a graphical turn based pvp game, it functions like the urban dead but with better graphics. Its based on the cartoon Neon Genesis Evangelion, you pick a faction, Nerv, Angels or Seele. Nerv have to protect their headquarters, Seele and the Angels have to break in. You start off with just 1 unit and everytime you lvl your squad, you're given an extra unit. I've got 7 units. Its really a mmotbs. http://www.absoluteterror.net/ Renaissance Kingdoms is simply roleplaying the medieval lifestyle, players have occuptions and can take government positions. I got irritated with this after my animals all died. http://www.renaissancekingdoms.com/ Visual Utopia is like those text based strategy games, but it has a visual map, which makes the game more tricky. Like an mmo of civilization. Only join when a new round starts because regular players show no mercy. http://visual-utopia.com/ Instant Action has a few games you can play in 3d. http://www.instantaction.com/ |

try travian, it's pretty fun...it's not too shabby for a browser game!

I agree with your observation.
Unfortunatly it takes ages to make a new game and people that make them find it easier to buy an already made game and go with it. They initially have plans and dreams to change it, however once they find out how much work it will take, they just post the same game and hope no one will spot the difference. Its a shame because they fill up the top lists with lists of the same game with a different name. There are not many unique games, the ones that are do well (fallensword, knightfight etc), though the list is small. |

I'd like to add Lands of Hope to the list of non-template games out there, It took me about 8 months to code working 10hrs a day, and it has been out 3 years this month and i've worked on it about 8 - 10hrs a day each day for the last 3 years (give or take the odd day off and time going potty!). http://www.forlornonline.com
It is the kind of game you either love or hate but it incorporates many elements of gameplay and thousands of hours of content. I agree about pre-made games, I think it is a lazy way to say you have "made" a game, not only that it is ruining the efforts of those of us who have spent time and energy on an original game as most people spend far too long trying to find something unique and often give up trying. Of course I can still remember a few years ago when there were only a handful of games on the web and now it seems every other game is a pimp game ... I mean come on what on earth is that all about? Still it does give me a great idea for my next game "Space Whores 2040 (c)" Last edited by forlorngames; 07-08-2008 at 10:55 PM. Reason: Adding url to Lands of Hope |

I'd like to make one statement:
"Barely a quarter of the browser based mmos out there are mafia based" And another statement: "Your observation fits every genre of mmo from fantasy to sci fi for browser based because the game devs are too lazy to write in a more advanced engine."

I agree with you, however without blatantly advertising streetmobster.. our game was developed right from scratch and resembles no other mafia game out on the browser based market to date.
I posted a screenshot: ![]()
