You want a compliler? The easiest I ever used was Textpad, however Eclipse is much better and helps you a lot when you have errors in your code.

I've heard Dr. Java is a great option, though I've never really tried it out. Apparently, it's rather lightweight, and designed for students to use.

Never heard of Dr. Java. I know at least where I go all the students in the first classes use jGrasp and move into Eclipse.
