I play on normal.

Generally I have my Hero use grease on the incoming monsters, they'll fall to the ground upon contact with it, I'll then use fireball, forcing them to the ground again, and as the grease sets alight, it does fire DoT. Then I generally follow up with Winter's Grasp or Arcane.

The other mage is purely dedicated to healing, and seemingly burns through mana at an insanely fast rate.

My Hero is pretty messed up in terms of skills, the victim of curiosity really. I still manage to do 56% of the party damage however.

I need more tactics slots!

I use grease fire sometimes aswell. But I usually do this, hold party, hero (warrior) goes off exploring, if it's safe i'll let the party catch up and then have hero go off alone again. When I run into baddies, pause game, cast earth quake around where the hero is standing, order hero to run back to party, cast blizzard over the earthquake, the enemies will chase hero into earthquake and keep falling over and getting frozen in the blizzard. The glyphs are also good, glyph of repulsion on a doorway will keep enemies on the other side of it, leaving you free to do a grease fire on them or whatever, sleep is a great spell as well. Force field will save you a lot, if you run into a big mob with a yellow/orange enemy, you can put it in a force field and fight the white named enemies first.

I'm planning on going through nightmare with a mage as my main next time round, in denerim now doing the alienage quest, only a few more hours for this play through.

I use cone to freeze enemies, get my assassin to 1 hit KO them with a crit.
When dealing with arcane horrors/immunes, i continue to freeze them non-stop while my tank tank it, my dds kill it. Simple.
Dealing with hordes, just use both last skills of ice and fire, they'll die before reaching you. Even if they reach, just freeze them again.
I killed the elite dragon that way too, jus freezing and range dd + tank tanking.

you can do interesting stuff with tactics. i use morigan along with wynne in my main party and have her use a lot of cold spells, if an enemy is frozen and hit with stonefist they'll usually shatter, so i've got a tactic for wynne to stonefist anyone that's immobilised and tactics on the warriors to use a strong attack on immobilised enemies as well. it works quite well.

there's some really clever stuff you can do, i saw someone on the dragon age forums post an example of how to use group heal in the tactics, was something like:
1: hero, health < 75% = jump to 2
2: sten, health < 75% = jump to 3
3: morigan, health < 75% = jump to 4
4: self, health <75% = use ability, group heal

but it wasn't that exactly, there was something else in there that made sure no one had drank a pot before you casted the group heal, gonna have to go look it up later.

I am not using tactics at all, I prefer to control my chars manual for better control over battle. its slow but effective =P

yeh i pause a lot as well for the tougher fights, but tactics help a lot for the easier fights, you don't have to micro manage every heal and you can set your party to attack enemy with lowest health to concentrate fire, use X ability if enemy hp < 25% for a quick kill and stuff like that to make life easier.

Meh, was bored and decided to re-sub to WAR since they've merged servers and stuff. Plenty of other upgrades aswell (I assume, some PQs made easier etc it seems). Kinda enjoying it again, but heh we'll see how it goes. One pleasant surprise was that I had a cape in mail. Year old account gift or something like that heh
