I am using a computer that I spent a little over 500 to upgrade everything and I play crysis just fine using vista and directx 10.....

so you don't need an expensive computer to do it.....

1: I said the total value of the system, not the value of a single upgrade
2: Never said that it won't make improvements, I said that you can improve your system much better from other areas.

Aka: you have $500 for upgrades. There are two options you can go with. One will improve your system by "5 points", the other upgrade will improve your system by "10 points". They both improve your system, but one does it better than the other for the same amount of money.
Of course, if you already have the second upgrade, might as well get the first one.

Though now that I think about it, 3k is a bit much... Wasn't thinking about that(really, just picked a number out of my head). If you use the proper way to select your parts, you should consider DX10 in the 1.5K-2k range.
