The first Giant Spider? o_O
Well, first things first, remove Automatic mode. Press the A key to do so.
Next, click thrice, perform a knockback, then ready your smash and hit him before he gets up. Wash, rinse, repeat.
If you mess up the rotation once, the chain will be broken.
Also, side-note, you could always get potions to use while the Spider is in the midst of recovery.
