Don't try making a fully fleged html site yet, first get used to content and stuff. Go to www.freewebs.com and make a free site with a givien layout.

Freeweb is umm, "not good".

Try looking at "professional" websites and see what they all have in common, such as fast page load, easy user navigation, etc.

Take www.google.com for example, loads with a blink of an eye.

Hmmm you can always get an already finished html code... and mess around with it, like I do .

Another good way is to use an IDE with drag and drop capabilities (just DON'T use frontpage)

That way, you can easily setup the website and then check what the HTML code looks like.
Later, when you get more comfortable with it youcan switch to writing straight HTML in, for example, notepad.

Umm, here's a guide for HTML
http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

After learning HTML, learn some PHP :/, it'll help out for a good website.

Before PHP, learn css and perhaps javascript or flash.
