The story begins (and, I suppose may well end, depending on the actions of you, the players) in the sprawling, decaying cosmopolis of Mir, a city on a planet much like ours (but not).
The gap between the rich and poor of this world is quite large, and there is not much of a middle class left. In most of the world, governments have lost most of their power and influence, having bled themselves dry, figuratively speaking, through constant war and feuding. Massive corporations, made rich by the governments, were able to maintain stability by taking over, for the most part, though some countries collapsed entirely into anarchy and civil war instead. Incidentally, the nations of this world did at one point possess nuclear weapons, but corporations banded together to create (and enforce) an agreement to have them destroyed, and stop their creation. All of these events occurred in a 5 year period 55-50 years ago, roughly.
With few exceptions, the resources of this world have been overexploited, almost, in some cases, to the point of depletion. Almost everything, including food, is now produced synthetically, at least among the lower classes. Especially in the massive cities, pollution is rampant.
Basically, the only way for the lower classes to really advance anymore is getting involved with the criminal element, whether the massive black market that trades in everything from information to body parts to illegal technology, or the criminal organizations that, in practice, run most things not controlled by the corporations. Everyone else struggles just to get by.
Oh, one another note. Although there are restrictions on the creation of Artificial Intelligence, in terms of power and intelligence, there exist hidden factories and workshops where, for a high price, illegal robots are created, sometimes even, it is suspected, for the use of the powerful corporations, mainly for use in the fields of assassination and espionage.
Anyways, Mir is, for the most part a pretty ghetto place. There are several enclaves, kept apart from the rest of the city, controlled by powerful corporations or families, but these are very small compared to the rest of the city.
The first thing that will happen in this RP is that you will receive notification, one way or another (it’s really up to you) that there is a certain individual who has had a contract put on their life, for a large sum of money.
I’ll write in more details about the city and the plot once I get an idea of how many people are interested.
