Play the first one.
Not only does it have good art, it's the funniest game I've ever played.
Just don't be afraid to use GameFaqs. The puzzles in it are absurdly hard, and not in a good challenging way. In a "WTF I would have NEVER thought of that" way, that is frustrating.
Still fun!

The art is pretty great in the series, though.
