Hey guys. Just want to throw out this question out to you that has been bothering me ever since my decision to pursue a career in computer animation. You see, I lack any sort of knowledge on 3-D models and texturing and animating and etc. Not to mention I have no basic knowledge of programming whatsoever.
I was wondering....what are the benefits that computer animation/modeling give to the general community/society? I know that this field of career is booming in entertainment industry, such as films/games, but are there other areas that computer animation is being proved useful? Any medical, educational, psychological, financial benefits? Is it going to be more useful and diverse as a field of study in Engineering?
Any member here who is an expert in this field of area please share your information. I want to put my nagging worries to rest by knowing that computer animation is just more than entertainment-based.
Best is if you can enrol into some marketing, business and advertissing programs also.
With graphic, animation, marketing, business and advertissing knowledge, it could get you ANYWHERE. With just 3d animation gets you nowhere. You don't have to go deep in marketing and business. You just need to know the basic and it'll help you a lot in designs and stuff.

If you're asking if this field can revolutionize the world the answer is no.

It can have various applications such as facial reconstruction, simulations, etc. There's a lot of things you can do with knowledge in that field. Creativity helps a lot too.

Modeling programs will make you major money. 3-d modeling can be used of the top of my head:
1. Construction (model it before you build it)
2. Medicine - modeling tumors and organs can help surgeries
3. Meteorology - modeling storm systems etc
But most of it requires that you learn programming but being able to use those programs may also help. You can start by learning some autocad and stuff.

ah so if I am planning to help make the world a better place, then computer animation is not the career for me eh?
what if i really want to still pursue computer animation? i mean, i've known from the getgo that Engineering is the career that will revolutionize the world, thats something obvious....but can i use graphic animations to maybe save lives, heal sick people, makes people's lives comfortable, etc? i guess one way is to work collaboratively with others in making a learning/tutorial program that er..."teaches" potential students in their area of interest? I read an article where this medical group created an animated program that is pretty much a Surgery Simulation. This is one way to benefit the world in a good way besides entertainment...no?

XD i dont know, ive always thought that field was overcrowded because of all the people that want to design for games and crap
Well...advertissing is fun. It teaches how to mess up people's mind...then if you learn Graphic Design on top of that...backedup with some philosophie knowledge...
Imma God!

There are limited uses for computer animation/3D modelling that would be able to cure anything other than boredom. But still, most of the design work on pretty much everything (from toys to furniture to mechanical details to buildings to spacecraft) is done in 3D. Reading someone's blueprints and making 3D stuff out of them...

Yeah, imo, you have to know a little bit about the programs you're gonna use etc. Almost all these forumers want to be a 3d game designer but they don't know a thing, they don't even know what kind of tools they use.

By 'these' I mean OnRPG'ers that want to be a game designer, I've seen alot of topics about them so :/

well i am going to take the programming course when i go back to college...so I will learn how to use programming and stuff~ but leaving that aside....
is computer animation a hard career? I've heard that there are layoffs and whatnot after projects and such. The income is not as good as an Engineer, and that its not very appreciated by the community except in the Gaming and Film Industry. Regardless I still want to pursue this field of major. I've seen countless films and animations that others have made and I was impressed.
And no, I am not like the "other" OnRPG-ers who are between ages 10-16 and want to pursue 3-D animation because it looks cool...I am actually 20 years goin on 21 thank you very much, and am pursuing animation to use my skills to benefit the community.

Well I'm going applying to college under this major. I would have to say this major has broaden in the horizon into many fields as mentioned in the previous posts. I suggest you take a 3d animation course like I did this past summer and it was extremely fun. I suggest you to play around with maya personal learning edition and get a book on maya to get ahead of the game.
Heres what i learned in three weeks time
