Every single day, we have on average of 5000 children dying from unclean water.
Each day, we have around 1 billion people that have a crisis in their homes; one that is mainly connected to water.
With one small step with this machine, in 30 years, or less, we could say to ourselves that those numbers are ancient history.
I present to you, the machine from Dean Kamen, "that guy who invented the segway," The slingshot!
What is the slingshot you may ask? The slingshot is a water purifying system that may take any type of polluted, dirtied, or unclean water, and turn into the water we drink today. You may take sludge, you may take ocean water, you may take water that was "owned" by an oil spill, and the ending result will be you drinking safe and clean water.
This machine uses two hoses, and enough energy to run a toaster. You put the unclean water into one tank, and that tank literally boils that water. Not like in an oven or pot, but boils it until all of that becomes vapor. Then it goes through a recondensing stage which, where in any case of metals, or oil, or anything dirty, stays in that tank because it simply can't be turned into vapor. That vaporized water enters another tank where it goes through a tube, or a pipe, which where when you turn on the tap, you have clean water.
That was my summary.
Read the article as well.
I saw this on the science channel (on dish network), with many other cool things that are developing now which will definitely make the world a better place.

I saw this machine on Dragon's Den, they refused to loan the guys the money because the water tasted like crap and wasn't drinkable or something, they all were pretty harsh lol. Theres also another version of the machine that makes water out of air and purifies it in the same cycle. The machines are far from ready to be used but it is a good advancement and if people keep working on it, lives may be changed :D. (The way they showed it on Dragon's Den though...boy it needs some work)

What? seriously? We should be dead by now! 5000 kids are deff not born everyday to make up for that.
The main problem with this machine is one thing... the places where these water related problems are in third-world nations. And thusly, most homes that would need this... don't even get enough power to use a toaster... I mean... sure its a good idea and can save the lives of those who can use it... but unless it comes free with a solar panel... it won't be saving many at all.

5000x365 = 1.2m if my math is correct.
We have over 6 BILLION people on this planet.
Each day, the number of humans increases by approximately 200,000.
HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder what the ratio of people dying each day is...

According to the CIA World Factbook, as of July, 2005, there were approximately 6,446,131,400 people on the planet, and the death rate was approximately 8.78 deaths per 1,000 people a year. According to our nifty desktop calculator, that works out to roughly 56,597,034 people leaving us every year. That's about a 155,000 a day.
So according to that, 200,000 - 155,000 = 45,000
The births per day minus the deaths per day leaves 45,000 added to the population of the world
(Getting this info from googling)
Also more interesting stuff :
According to NetAid, over a billion people, or roughly one in six, live in extreme poverty. Extreme poverty is defined as living on less than US$1 a day.
The World Bank goes on to define moderate poverty as basic subsistence living, on $1 to $2 a day. All told, nearly half the world's population lives in poverty -- that's 2.8 billion people living on less than two dollars a day.

1.2 million people die each year?
That's still a lot, even with the 6 billion population.
Whats the ratio of kids getting born daily?

Actually.

and I think that the death to born is 1:2 ?

1:2 is great rates
we could use some population decrease and its most likely poor and un needed people so i feel this water purification won't help but actually hurt the people who are of the middle and upper class who are fighting with the lower class pathetic scraps of flesh they call lives
we do not need these people so why help them

Guys, you're turning this thread upside down.
Think of the positive side!
Why do we need these people? Because they are people.
What's the difference, other than money or ethnicity, between you and them? NOTHING. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. So if you give them no reason to live, then why should we?

Re-read what I said, man.
These people deserve to live as much as we do. They just don't have as many opportunities at living like us. That is why people like Dean are trying to create possibilities.
Oh, I forgot to mention one thing. They're trying to make it portable to bring it to the third world countries, but they're having issues with exactly that: making it portable.

Just the deaths and it not making sense. Sure, discuss it, I never said not to.
I just stated that we should talk more on the "bright" side, figuratively.

There is better versions of similar machines though the one I saw on tv makes water out of AIR and its solar powered (it cost like $1000) there is already more advanced systems than Dean's one and better ones. Seriously how much clean pure water are they gonna get out of some sludge, maybe a cup? out of air they can get as much as they want. The thing is, somebody needs to supply these machines, the people living in poverty live off of $1 or $2 a day, and thats probably just counting the crap they find and eat and the worth of it, I doubt they actually have $1 in their hand and go out to a shop and use it.
So if 1000 of these people save their daily spending for 1 day they can afford just 1 machine, how the hell can they do that theyre practically dieing already, barely living. The richer countries should help more, help supply technologies like this 1 you get what I'm saying? I mean isn't it worth it saving a lot of lives rather than spending so much money on dumb things. Like the olympics here in london, they spent over £2billion making the damn facilities thats over $3,732,876,701 now sure its an important event but damn think about the better causes it could have been used for. If that money was spent into these machines it would supply 3732876. The problem is people arent willing to spend their money to help other people...people these days are fuked up :/ Alot of the rich countries spend so much money into things yet the least they spend is usually on helping those less fortunate, and then they can come on tv talk about poverty etc all that jazz but what do they do about it, they dont do shit . Pisses me off bigtime

No, these machines make more than gallons (yes, with an s) a day. These machines will go out to those people in the third world countries for free, enough per sq/k and 1000-2000 dollars for us.

Solar water distillers. Require less energy than a toaster and a large enough array can supply a family for an entire day in third world countries. They run for about $100 each and require no additional investment. (cept maybe cups for drinking).

Asking for $100 from somebody living in poverty like that is like asking $10,000 dollars from a lower class family and like $50-100,000 from a middle to higher class family. It just isn't practical.

yes technology is amazing...
like I have told everyone before these next 50 years will be amazing in how fast the advancements will be....
trust me sci-fi will not be sci-fi anymore it will be something that happens everyday in life...
we already have technology to grow back limbs soon any body part will be able to be grown back.
space travel will be far advanced and we will start the teriform project on mars....
machines will take care of most of our daily routines....can't wait for the robotic lan mower that cuts the lawn by itself or the refridgerator that will give me recipes based on the food stored in it.....or the eletric doors that will open by themselves for my house.........or carry out any of the other house hold tasks that haven't been covered with today's technology.
....yes it will be a somewhat lazy life outside of work....as long as you keep up with the advancements of technology...
so many things I could list maybe I will do it later....

It's cheaper than forcing a family to pay for electricity just so they can have clean water. Besides, most of these technologies are paid for by humanitarian agencies and governments.
