I saw this on the news this evening and this is the article posted on the BBC's website.

You hear alot about supposed "crackdown's" on filesharing... is this all just a bunch of crap or are there real risks? I know we already discussed this a bunch of times in the past but this stuff on the news started me thinking about it again. I still think its a pile of crap though but have any of you stopped or regulated the amount of stuff you download in light of recent events over the last year or so?

also, what the hell is eDonkey and Gnutella?

eDonkey is just another file-sharing program like limewire.

I don't really download all that much. I live on welfare and in a crappy apartment in the richest (IMHO) part of the world (california), so if I didn't use torrents, I would probably never have heard of all my favorite music

I might download 5-10 songs every 1-2 months but besides that that's really it.... I don't torrent games or anything.

Gnutella are the people who made Limewire and other things I think.

I love being a pirate, I only buy cd's if I really like the whole album.

Gnutella and eDonkey are file sharing networks. Your clients connect to these networks.

When you use Limewire, for example, you're not sharing files with other Limewire users. You're sharing files with everyone who uses the Gnutella network, which is probably the most popular P2P system.

It's all bull shit unless you do it a LOT. Like if you pirate every single game when it comes out, you're going to get caught. If you spread them around, you'll get caught. Etc.

If you try to download games on lime wire aren't there usually viruses there anyway, and when you do download a copy I doubt it will work. -_-

With more and more artists jumping on the "download my music for free, I don't mind" bandwagon, perhaps they don't need to be.

I wonder if they will try to get the other billion of people that download stuff from the net through P2P programs... every once in awhile some news such as this comes out in order for people to "stop" downloading stuff illegally but I doubt that will happen... C'mon, some software is already available through p2p programs, rapidshare, mIRC, etc before it even comes out and when that happens they expect no one will download it?

I'm not defending "pirates" but this is a discussion that goes on and on and I will doubt it will ever end. One way is to make it available to everyone. Example: Imagine you live in India and your monthly income is 500$. you have a family to support, a house to pay and that a game or other software costs 65$. If that person might download it from the net do you think he/she will buy it for a price that is over 10% of the monthly income?

More and more like who?

Because your point fails for two reasons:

1) So far who do we have as pioneers? Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis. Bands that, besides being super rich, actually rely on their fanbase being loyal enough to buy it and pay money ANYWAY, which has happened. It's like reverse psychology, if you don't have to pay, you're more inclined to pay SOMETHING. It was a test, by Radiohead's own admission, to see how fans would react to being given the reins like they so often wish they had. Most of them didn't disappoint.

However, more people illegally downloaded the file from unofficial sources than the ones who downloaded it, for free, from the official source. All Radiohead asked was that you respect their wishes enough to take it from them, even if you don't pay, and even that was beyond some people.

2) That's their choice. If someone decides to do their job for free, then let them. I'm not against people giving their own music away for free, I'm against people taking priced works of music without the artist's say so. Don't think for a second that Radiohead would have done what they did if they hadn't got the fanbase to support such a move.

But I'm wondering who these more and more people are.

They're usually people who have made enough money that they don't need to worry. You won't catch many bands that intend to make a rightful living of their music, just starting out, doing the same thing.

It's always been my opinion that it's the artist's right to do what he or she wants with their music, not the listener's right to do what they want with it. If artists wanna encourage illegal downloading of their music, fine. That doesn't automatically mean that free music is the way to go. People are just so overwhelmingly self-important that it's an "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." society.

As long as bands realise that people still want physical CDs, I couldn't care less if they put digital releases as priority. As long as CDs continue to get released, I don't mind.

I download at least 1.5GB of illegal data a week. Mostly up to date anime but some is music, software and what not.
