View Full Version : I don't think it'll work.

I'm sorry, but I think onrpg is "just another forum" now. Onrpg's old look was one of a kind and noticable, this is just another one of thousands. It's obvious that doing this will lose tens of thousands of members, and though I'm sure there will be new people joining too, I think the loss will be greater than the gain for at least a couple of years.

You can say you don't care about post counts and join dates, but I'm sure you're not thrilled at starting it all over.

I just hope you don't nuke the old forums. Because I'm keeping my hopes up that they'll be a change back. This type of forum just isn't my thing.

Don't flame me for my opinion? Thanks.

The old forums are going to be saved as an archive. You have no idea about the advantages of vBulletin over phpBB however. We switched because if we didn't some one out there would nuke the forums themselves. phpBB is a security risk.

Here, let me paint you a picture.

Imagine Gabe is a ship capitian, the mods are his sailors, the forum is the ship, and you guys are passengers.

When OnRPG first started out, Gabe didn't have alot of money to get a nice, vast ship. He had to cut-back, and make do with what he could get. Over the time, because the ship wasn't built well to begin with, leaks were sprung that had to be patched. And that just kept on happening. Ofcourse, the passengers were all in thier cabins, with no idea of the hard work that is going on below them trying to keep the boat afloat. It eventully got so bad that the boat was more patches then anything. It wouldn't be much longer until it would just fall apart on it's own and sink.
So, the captian decides that it's time to get a brand new ship, one that is fast, beautiful, and built well. He bought the new ship and got it all ready, and then forced the passengers to move. Ofcourse, many of the passengers didn't like moving to a new cabin, much less a new ship. But they didn't relize the dangers of the ship they were on. The old ship was cleared, and closed off, while the new ship was loaded with people. Some were angry and left, but, in the end, because the capitian had a new, better looking, faster moving, bigger ship, the ammount of customers increased many times.

Thats basicly whats happening. I don't see at all where we'd loss so many members and have no gain for a few years...
I mean, a month or two, yea. Thats a given. But even half a year? The internet grows faster then anything else, and with the ammount of current traffic that we do get, we will be at our old place in no time.
You really just need to watch the culture of the internet and understand how it functions.
This will improve our traffic alot.

I do agree with having the forum with-in the module, unfortently PHPNuke does not support VB, and we have too many tie-ins with google to just dump PHPNuke.
We may come across something that will work, but until then...

Haha... could have come up with a better metaphor myself!

Props to Fabiann!

I understand .
But.
The new ship now looks like all the millions of ships in the harbour!
The design and changes are too common.
The seagulls are flying around and wondering do we crap! or do we land!

Well, when you get a new Model #3252 ship, at first it will look like all the rest new Model #3252 ships. But after time it will become more and more uniuqe.
Any new product will look exactly like the rest of them, but after some use, they become "personolized".

lol...nice analogy, FabianN...
but yea..although OnRPG was "unique" its primary use was the forums anyway...or at least it was mine...
to be honest, i didnt really like the game list thingy cause it just wasnt useful nor helpful...
and a lot of things were out of date.
oh well...i like this ^-^

Thats a really good analogy Fabian.

Its a given that a new forum won't look that great at first. For one, we can only select the two designs for how things look. That'll all change over time though, as the mods settle in and get a chance to work more on the site.

Well remember that forums are forums, it is there skins that make them different. I give you all the opportunity to create a new look for the forums, then if the admins like it they might add it. I think we should get the option to have the navigation bar on the side but we are not to decide/
But yes as SS said just wait a bit, we are not currently trying to fully do everything, we are slowly moving into this and adding things as well go.

To continue: on the boat, you got the basic cruise line boat. It has the normal 100 foot pool, the casino, the food, and dance club. Now we are updating it, we are giving you the spa, the running course, the shopping mall, and a free trip to Hawaii.

cool nice free trip to hawaii, plus, there'll be internet cafe, zoo, playground, swimming pool, and a stadium where the olympics games for 2010 will be held!
