View Full Version : Some newbie questions.
Hi. Im thinking of getting Guild Wars soon but there are still a few things I don't understand and I would like answered before I get the game. Please read and answer the following questions, not just for myself but other gamers that would like to get Guild Wars soon. Thx :D
1. How do you unlock skills?
2. There is a story to the game right? If so how long does it take to beat the game?
3. After you beat the game can you still do quests or is it all PvP?
4. If you don't get into a guild...are you screwed?
5. Do most people do quests and grinding in parties or do they solo?
6. Is the game really team-based and tactical (as in you have to work with your team [teamwork])?
7. Is it really true that if you leave the town alone, you wont see anybody else killing stuff and such?
8. Can 2 people be logged on 1 account at the same time, though in different characters?
9. Since this is a B2P game and not P2P, is there still a cash shop or something where you pay real money to get unique items? (Like in Silkroad Online, or Gunbound/Rakion)
10. Are there pets in the game?
11. The highest level is 20 because the game is based on skills and strategy right? So does it mean that that a group of players at level 1 are able to PvP a group of players at level 20 and win?
(BTW: Question number 8 is not so that i buy the game and let 4 different people [4 different characters] play for free, but was because a friend and I were gonna split the price half-half and share the account with 2 characters each. Thx again :D)
Also please post some newbie questions you can think of to help others as well. Thx.

1. Skills are unlocked by obtaining them on any RP character (either through quests, skill capturing, or purchasing with gold), or by using faction won through PvP to purchase them.
2. Yes, there is a story. How long it takes depends on how quickly you rush through the game. You can take two days or two months, it's up to you.
3. RP characters can still redo missions, earn gold, and do anything after completely beating the game that they could before beating it.
4. You aren't screwed, but a guild does make it easier to find a group, since you can just call guildmates to help you out rather than pick up random people who might not be anywhere near as good.
5. There is very little grind. Quests can be done with henchmen (AI controlled players with pre-set skills/attributes), but many still prefer to do quests or 'explore' in groups. You'll rarely find groups that want to go out purely to go get exp, since those people are usually lower level than everyone else around them and they'd rather pay the higher level people to power level them (less people in the group increases exp)
6. Yes. By the time you reach Lv20, there are still missions to do where monsters still get progressively stronger. The missions get harder, whereas you don't get stronger. It becomes important to have some sort of organization or strategy or at least some skill to get through those missions.
7. Yes. Not having random people outside in explorable areas removes things that made explorable areas in other games detestable... PKers, kill stealers, looters, spawn camping, advertisers who whore the shout channel...
8. No.
9. No. There are no need for uber purchasable items, because items play a very small part in the power of your character. Items such as 200% exp boosts can be purchased for in-game gold.
10. Rangers have pets, but they aren't for display or dress-up or to show off (except for the Black Widow, which is just a show-off because it takes a fair amount of effort to get). Pets provide extra damage (though not much) and help Rangers tank damage (though not much). As mentioned, Necromancers can raise minions from the dead. Rangers and Ritualists can cast rituals to summon Spirits which support allies or cripple enemies.
Mini-pets are available, but are costly and rare because the only ways to get one are to open your character's birthday present (which you get after the character's been around an entire year), buy it off someone else, or buy the Factions collector's edition (You get a free mini-pet, but only one). Unlike regular Ranger pets, all Mini-pets do is follow you around and look nice.
11. In the most extreme cases, a group of Lv1s can beat a group of Lv20s. Similarly, most Lv20s can beat Lv24+ monsters. It depends on the skill set-up of the players and monsters... if all Hydras do is spam Fire Magic, then using Elemental Resistance and Mantra of Fire make it possible for someone very low level to kill a Hydra. Warriors who focus purely on damage can get wailed on by a groups that can simply blind the warriors, or kill them before they can even get close.
Course this doesn't come up very much, since most players reach Lv20 in a short time (very short compared to grinders like FFXI or WoW).
Hi there. I got some new questions that I want to ask you all. Thx for reading and answering :D :
1. Is the game newbie friendly?
2. How many people play the game? Is there lots of lag because there are so many people?
3. As a noob when you first start the game, do you get into parties often? (As a level 1)
4. When you make a PvP character and you start at level 20, do you start with the pro level 20 armor, weapons, and skills?
Thx. :D
P.S: Please think of some questions whether you know the answer or not just to help newbies or people who want to get the game. Thx :D Looks like a great game

1. I think the game is newbie friendly. Factions is pretty simple, follow your primary quest or mission. And it's pretty easy to level up on newbie island. Starting out in Prophecies is a little harder and takes longer to level up when your a newcomer. The best advice for a newcomer to prophecies is to follow the storyline, do all your quests and missions in order, and take sufficient time in presearing so your better equiped for post.
2. Wow....lots of people that play. Not too much for lag problems, that depends more on your own connection and making sure your pc is clean, but I never have a problem with it.
3. When you start off in prophecies, groups are a max of two players. Once you hit post searing, as you get farther into the game, the size of your group party increases. And yes, there are always groups of other newcomers that will welcome you to there group. As long as your level is acceptable for that area of play. When you start in prophecies, your party size is larger, and maxes out at 12 in elite faction missions. And when you can't find a group, there are always henchman (npc's) that you can add to your party. Most missions and quests in the game are easily done with henchies.
4. Yes you get max armor when you make a pvp character..but...your gonna want upgrades to your armor and weps. These items are unlocked during game by collecting balthazar factions (these are awarded for victory in pvp battles) or by identifying items that won during regular pve game play. Skills also have to be unlocked during regular game play. You can unlock skills with balthazar factions, but, that means they are only available for use by a pvp character. Also, when you make a pve character, and skills you have learned or boughten, are unlocked for future use by any pve character.

4. When you make a PvP character and you start at level 20, do you start with the pro level 20 armor, weapons, and skills?
1. Tutorial tips show you how to play the game, and tutorial quests show you the mechanics of the game. Even the PvP features a tutorial which walks you through and lets you fight in each of the possible 4v4 PvP types. 8v8 PvP and 12v12 PvP has no tutorial though, the only way to get experienced with one is to participate or spectate.
2. Lots. Some towns will be so crowded that it'll push your computer, but there isn't any actual internet-based lag. Just computer slowdown.
3. Parties start off with a maximum size of 2... and there are only two quests that'll require having a party. Most people play alone so that they can move at their own pace as they learn. As you progress through the game, the maximum party size will increase, eventually reaching 8.
4. PvP characters start off at Lv20, with the full 200/200 attribute points, maximum armor levels (for their class), and maximum-damage weapons. But, they are limited to skills available from templates (which generally suck) or skills that have been unlocked in RP play. They also have no weapon modifications (which make up for alot of that weapon's power) available for their weapons, or any runes (which raise attribute levels without using attribute points, and they also make it possible to raise attributes past 12 to a maximum of 16). Those must also be unlocked by getting them in RP or buy buying them with faction (which is much more common)
Weapons of this quality are considered rare and very expensive in the RP world, unless you want to use green items. Green items are dropped by certain bosses and possess the best weapon modifications and best stats, making it possible for RP characters to PvP (RP characters can spend extra gold on sets of armor that have the same armor levels but simply look better or unique, seeing this armor in PvP means that that character is RP instead of PvP and comes from someone who has alot of gold to spend).

Maximum party size is 12, when your in factions elite mission, eg. Urgoz Warren

1.well the game is quite newbie friendly.
2.well it depends on the computer you have but yes it does some times lag.
3.You don't really get into parties at the start be as you go on being in a party is very important.
4.Yes they do start off with all the armour and wepons but not very good skills
:) Maximum party size is 12, when your in factions elite mission, eg. Urgoz Warren
So does that mean you have to have factions to get the max party size, or can you just have Prophecies and get the max party size of 12? Also are "factions elite missions" only in Factions, or are they in Prophecies as well? Thx :)
Also another 3 questions I wanted to ask:
1. In Prophecies, as a warrior, you tank. As a monk, you heal your party members. As a Elementalist you do major damage and do area damage on a group of opponents, but what is your role in a party when you are a Necromancer, Ranger, or Mesmer?
2. I heard that there was a quest where you go to Old Ascalon or something like that in Prophecies. Is it true that once you go there everything is different and you can't go back to Ascalon City?
3. All the websites with Guild Wars builds are very complicated so I don't understand. They all say stuff like "Blood Magic: 12 (+5)". What does it mean?
P.S: Can somebody give me a link to different Guild Wars builds (that explain the builds in a simple way that someone who doesn't have the game can understand) so I can look at them and see which class is the best so if I somehow get the game I can have a headstart. Thanks again :D

1. All professions can take up different roles - warriors aren't limited to strictly tanking (they can be damage based or status ailment based as well). Each profession can take each of the attributes it has and take that attribute to such an extreme that it works as a character build. Necromancers can focus on cursing enemies with the Curses attribute, raising dead and poisoning enemies with Death Magic, direct damage and life stealing with Blood Magic, or attempt to juggle any of these.
Break those attributes down to their skills, and you have even more builds that a class can do... a Curses N can focus on Spiteful Spirit for damage or focus on Wither/Malaise for energy denial, a Death Magic N can use Aura of the Lich to tank damage and allow more life-sacrificing skills or focus on Summon Flesh Golem to really get some muscle into their undead army..
Most professions can fall into almost all of the basic roles (tanker, healer, protector, shutdown, spiker/damage, condition), but here are some of the roles that Ns, Rs, and Mes have exclusively:
Spiteful Spirit N - Uses Spiteful Spirit, which is considered the best way to do damage to many enemies at once. Other skills are also used so that Spiteful Spirit can be recast more often.
Battery - Uses Blood is Power, which supplies allies with extra energy regeneration.
Minion Master - Uses Animate skills with Verata's Sacrifice to raise and maintain an undead army.
Minion Bomber - Uses Animate Bone Minions with Death Nova and Taste of Death to create many poison bombs with legs.
Orders - Casts Orders, which enchant the entire party and tend to improve their ability to do damage.
Aura Spiker - Spiker.
Trapper/ViM Trapper - Uses Traps, which can inflict many crippling conditions on enemies who happen to walk into them. ViM Trappers also use Victory is Mine to recharge their energy and health once they have gotten as many conditions on enemies as they can.
Bunny Thumper - Combines high pet damage with high hammer damage and knockdown for an offensive that'll make most human players run for their lives.
Ranger Spike - Spiker.
Shutdown - Uses skills to effectively "shutdown" an enemy, limiting their ability to do anything until the shutdown is over.
IW - Uses Illusionary Weaponry, which turns the Mesmer into a melee fighter that ignores armor. Flurry is often used to increase attack rate, and Distortion is used to reduce damage taken.
Quickcast Elementalist - Uses Elemental Attunement and any other Attunment to gain back 80% of the energy cost on elementalist spells. Flare spamming is common, since the Mesmer's Fast Casting allows Flares to be cast at a very fast rate, while the Attunements reduce the casting cost of Flare to 2. Was recently nerfed (Elemental Attunement now lasts much shorter without any points in Energy Storage, which Mesmers cannot get)
2. Once you leave Ascalon City for the Academy, the story progresses and you can never go back. They'll warn you before you go to the Academy to settle everything you want to do.
3. "Blood Magic: 12 (+5)" means that the build requires a basic Blood Magic level of 12, and then either uses runes or skills to raise it by +5.
Awaken the Blood temporarily raises Curses and Blood Magic by +2, Glyph of Elemental Power raises Fire/Air/Earth/Water Magic by +2 for the next spell. Runes can raise an attribute by +1, +2, or +3, and the headgear you use can raise one attribute by +1. Some weapons can increase your attributes by +1, but only when you're using skills (and only 20% of the time).
Attribute levels are very important to builds, and you'll see them mentioned often. Each attribute has a set of skills linked to it, and improving the attribute improves the effect of the skills it is linked to. Some attributes also have their own ability, such as Soul Reaping which gives you 1 energy for each level of Soul Reaping you have when an enemy dies.
Attributes can only reach a maximum level of 12 before any of these increasers take effect, which is why you never see builds that ask for 20 (+8) Blood Magic even though the build uses only Blood Magic.

Really the max party size is 8 but in these special Elite missions they are increased to 12 because they are usually very difficult to do with 8 and the missions are only available in factions.

1. Two Ways, One you make a roleplaying character and buy them from a skill trainer, or two, you make a PvP character then use faction to buy skills from the priest of Balthazar.
2. Depends on which version you're playing, it took me a good 40 hours but I used henchmen most of the time and got 60% death penalty near every time I went out.
3. Well quests are seperate from the story normally, once you beat the story you can still finish quests you didn't do, and you can still help you're guildmembers out as well.
4. No, just makes the game more fun and easier because you can ask someone for help.
5. Most go in parties, I'm a bit different and did most of the game with henchmen, it's impossible to literally solo, the game you need to have at least one henchmen/person in your party to do anything really.
6. Not really in PvE, in PvP it is entirely tactics, what professions are needed, what they need to do, etc. In GvG you need to have half a brain to think in order to win any matches.
7. Yes it gets rather lonesome as well if you don't have a guild or a friend to guild chat or whisper to.
8. I'm not sure about this one, I've yet to try it out, let me know if you find out.
9. No, everything is available to everyone as long as you have a high enough attribute level for the equipment, just buy the box, no more extra fees or anything.
10. Yes, if you play a ranger class and use a skill called charm animal, then you can charm an animal companion that follows you everywhere and fights for you.
11. My god common sense should answer this, NO, level 20's WILL have better equipment what they mean by skill is you could be level 20 and have the crappiest armor/weapons and still beat a level 20 with the best armor and such, not a person 19 levels higher then you.
I hope I helped.

1. Alright, in pre searing which is like a tutorial area sort of thing that brand new characters start it, yes it is. In post searing which is the actual game, you'll find a few people that will go HAHA I PWN J00 NUB.
2. In plain english, LOTS, and also if you have a good connection you shouldn't lag at all, I have DSL and I get like no lag whatsoever unless I'm running a bittorrent in the background.
3. In pre searing you may find a few people but not too many, once you hit about level 7 you can start charr hunting which you'll find people looking for parties for quite often.'
4. You have decent level 20 armor, weapons, and skills if you use a premade. If you make a custom character then you might have some diffulculties with skills. You have good enough equipment to rack up a few kills though.
I hope I helped you.
EDIT: Sorry for double posting, didn't want to confuse the two sets of questions together though.
