i know only a decent about ff but
here you go
ur question is too general so you might want to specify it so i can help you better
so let me ask alot of questions
what job do you prefer? melee? mage?
do you like tanking or damage dealing or supportive role
if you like to DD (damage dealing) do you prefer using weapon or magic?

1. Humee
This race is all-rounder. You can basically use any job without facing any status lacking. However, this is more of a hybrid style. so you can't outdamage those elves in melee and you have less mp than taru-taru
usually, most ppl who use humee (like me) care about appearance more than the status advantage

2. Elvaan
Elvaan has good strength. Samurai , Warrior , or any melee damaging class would be good for this class. And also, they have style! believe me i think they are the coolest among all the races (coolest doesnt mean the best looking). compared to humee, elvaan has less dex and charisma

3. Taru-taru
if you are a mage type. This will be ur first choice. they have huge MP supply. it will make a big difference at later lvl. they have the highest int and mind too i think. an ideal choice for mages. any mages.
downside is, they are really vulnerable to attacks. Low hp and defense
and they are cute, too.

4. Galka (only male)
The strongest defense is best to describe this race.
They have lots of HP and high vitality. Which means they'll make an ideal tanker. str is decent too. but low on dex, int and mind
Don't, please don't become a summoner with this race. you'll regret it
i would suggest dark knight for this job.

5. Mithra (only female)
The fastest, most agile race in FFXI! and they are the best ranger!
if you care about maxing ur agi stats, u should choose this race.
Ranger, ninja, thief is best for this class.

that's for the races

as for the classes , i'll explain briefly
The basic jobs:
1. Warrior
Good defense, good offense, standar melee class
2. Thief
decent defense, great DD (at high lvl), and you need to play a very mobile role for this class. e.g. you'll pull the mobs for your party and launch a sneak attack from behind!
3. Black Mage
one of the top 3 DD in FFXI. no doubt this class is the best offensive mage
4. White Mage
healer. one of the most important class in a party. Demand from PT is high
for this.
5. Red Mage
Red Mage is as important as Whm and Blm. You will act as a debuffer , healer and DD. If you like multitasking, try this
6. Monk
Some ppl said its hard to find PT for this class but, i think they are cool and damaging with proper food and equipment. i dont know much bout this

After you played the basic job, you'll probably find which advance job you'll like
so until then
have fun exploring them

i'd love to help you on Alexander if you want to play in my server
but i'm stopping for temporary. Next month i'll resume

P.S. I'm a Ninja/warrior in FF, if you want any tips, feel free to tell me

thanks, and for the questions.

im pretty sure i'd like to go for high damage, (i think monk/war/theif/bmage are pretty cool jobs). im not sure whether or not i'd like to use magic or melee yet though.....i'll probably decide on the race once i can actually see them, do the racial traits make that big of a difference in the long run?

question (even though its not in question form :p):
if you could just give me like 2 or 3 choices of main job/sub job ideas i would be overly greatful, i keep hearing all these people talking about newbs making retarded mixes with main and sub jobs.

and if you can get me one a world pass thing for alexander i'd gladly play there lol.

i came up with dragoon as my main and white mage as my sub..i figured leveling to 30 as a white mage would be good because there would be a lot of welcoming parties, and the defense wyvern seems to gain some pretty sweet effects from being a white mage..

do you guys think this would work effectivly?

Regarding ur choice DRG/WHM
i think thats not the best choice you can have
i mean, mostly melee jobs dont sub mages
with WHM as ur sub, you do less damage and dragoon is not built for defensive
but its for offensive
but for the first 10 levels of drg you can sub whm tho
yeah its a good idea to level whm as ur first basic jobs
but maybe if ur really serious about dragoon, you must! level up warrior too
or if you want a better combi for dragoon in the long run
do Dragoon / Samurai
this combi kicks *** as you can use your weapon skill more often
but... only works in high level tho
so basically
do DRG / WAR

and other thing
if you really really want to be the best DD
try Ranger
its one of the best DD in FF
however, expensive job to level up

here's what i'd suggest as a DD
Dragoon / Warrior
Dragoon / Samurai
Warrior / Ninja
Samurai / Warrior
Samurai / Ranger
Ranger / Warrior
Ranger / Ninja
Dark Knight / Warrior (not sure bout this)
Black Mage / white mage
Black Mage / Summoner

Well i think i know quite a few things about FFXI (level 69 mithran RDM\34BLM)
- first off dragoon sucks. period. adding whm as a sub for dragoon would just make it suck alot more, if you want to be somthing remotely like a dragoon be a paladin or darknight, they are much better, or if you like the fact that dragoons can summon dragons be a summoner, alot more, and better summons. :p

So what you mean is dragoons can do a lot of stuff but is nowhere near as good at it as the classes that focus on it do?

but in the end, race don't matter. It all depends on the skill of the player and the equipment of course. I've played with taru plds and wars that were better then any others I've encountered so far.

Exactly, dragoons CAN do alot of stuff but most of the stuff they can do sucks.

Ive actually seen the end game stats for most classes depending on race and the factor that seems to have the highest change is hp (tarutaru barely passing 1000 while the other races passing 1000 with varying amounts.[this is really for melee classes just to be clear]) The stats are also different but not by much.
