I noticed in another post HopeDagger mentioned a list of Engines so I'll post all of my favorite engines and tools

3D Engines

(Free) Irrlicht - http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/ -an Open source 3D engine, very fast, very easy to use.

(Free) Ogre - http://www.ogre3d.org/ - My favorite of free 3D engines, another free open source engine, it has a great community, and a really cool resource managment system! It also has a great Particle editor!

(Free) Crystal Space - http://www.crystalspace3d.org/ - A powerful 3D game engine with a rather large community following.

(Free) Delta 3D - http://www.delta3d.org - This is an open-source 3D gaming and simulation engine. It's free to use it any way you wish, and is designed to easily work with any other open-source programming project.

(Free) Panda 3D - http://www.panda3d.org - This is the same engine that was used to create Disney's ToonTown. Disney then threw into the open-source ring. You can now download it for free to use in whatever you like. It has both Python and C++ bindings, supposedly the Python ones are almost as fast as the C++ ones.

(Free for Windows/Linux) Q Developer Network - http://qdn.qubesoft.com/index.php?main=home - This engine is cross-platform, but for the free version it can only be made for Windows and Linux. If you pay money, you can get it on OSX, FreeBSD, PS2, and Xbox. Other than the engine, it also comes with a pretty easy to use WYSIWYG scene editing tool.

(Free) The Nebula Device - http://www.nebuladevice.org/ - This is is open-source, multiplatform, and has API's and libraries to couple it with just abouty any scripting or programming language. Their idea is to make things simple, sweet, and powerful. Each release has shorter more efficient code than the last.

Torque - http://www.garagegames.com - Torque costs $100 for a license, but is a very powerful and extremely popular game development engine/system. Many commercial games (remember Tribes?) were made using this.

Sound Libraries

(Free) OpenAL - http://www.openal.org/ - Open-source audio library made in the same syntactical style as OpenGL.

(Free for Non-Commercial Use) FMod - http://www.fmod.org/ - Powerful and popular audio library. Very stable and plenty of functionality.

Other Engines/Libraries

(Free) CEGUI - http://www.cegui.org.uk - A slightly complex but very flexible User Interface library (used by the OGRE3D graphics engine, too!)

(Free) ODE - http://www.ode.org/ - A free, open-source physics library.

(Free) Newton Dynamics - http://www.newtondynamics.com - A free (and powerful!) physics library with a fairly easy-to-use API.

(Free) OPAL - http://opal.sourceforge.net - A free, open-source physics library wrapper library, that makes physics integration easy on a high-level. Currently only wraps ODE.

(Free) Tokamak Physics - http://www.tokamakphysics.com/ - A physics SDK that now offers version 1 as free for all commercial/non-commercial uses.

RakNet - www.rakkarsoft.com - A powerful, high-level networking library that has recently left the realm of free software.

(Free?) Elysium Source - http://www.splamm.com/elysium/ - Open source 2D MMORPG engine made in Visual Basic 6. A great place to start out game devving.

Tools

Maya - http://www.autodesk.com/maya - Expensive, but professional 3D modeling tool.

Milkshape 3D - http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/ - Cheaper alternative to Maya, no where near as good at Texturing and Animation. (~$25)

fragMotion - http://www.fragmosoft.com/ - Havent used it to model but its great at Animation!

Ultimate Unwrap - http://www.unwrap3d.com/ - In my opinion the easiest to use UV mapper allowing you to texture many different model formats easily.

Adobe Photoshop - Possibly the most infamous and powerful 2D image editor on the market. Not free, however.

Jasc Paint Shop Pro - Rivaling Photoshop; yet another great 2D editor

(Free) The GIMP - http://www.gimp.org/ - a free image editor, said to rival both Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop, although known for it's, ah, 'unique' interface. :P

(Free) Blender - http://www.blender3d.org - This is an open-source 3d modelling program it has an intuitive interface and can make super high quality stuff. Free!

(Free?) Texporter - http://www.cuneytozdas.com/software/3dsmax/ - This is a plugin for 3DS Max that basically does what Ultimate Unwrap does.

(Free) Audacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net - An open-source audio editing progam. It's easy to use and available on many, many platforms. Highly recommended.

Hey Tocs

Thats a really good addition to the forums, I think this list will be appreciated by many other members of the forums and newcomers alike. I just hope it gets the proper amount of attention as in the case of the last forum, the useful stickies were often ignored.

Maya was bought by Audodesk (same people that own 3DS Max). So the website for the US is here (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=6871843&siteID=123112).

Awesome; someone took up the initiative and got a list started before me, hehe. We'll use this as the "Uber Main Listing of Gamestuffs" that I'll sticky.

As people post more engines/tools/creators/etc either yourself or I (if you don't mind) can update the post and form a comprehensive listing; hopefully combatting the slew of "do u know any mmorpg makers?" posts we get. :)

well, I've been looking at Kaneva Game Platform. Its specificly designed for MMO's, and can be tweeked for mmorpg's and such, which is what I'm attempting for my project. I wouldnt call it very user friendly though. but seems to have some good points.

www.kaneva.com

Might still be down for revisions to the site

I'm looking for a real easy engine to make an MMORPG though that still has real good performance visually, anyone know which one's best?

MisterPoppet

Sorry, an easy MMORPG engine isn't really possible. But the easiest out there are Kaneva and Mutliverse. I have a current copy of Kaneva if you'd like it. But Multiverse isn't out yet (I would personally wait for Multiverse if I were you).

Psi3D (http://psi3d.shadowedworks.com/) is a rendering engine, still in development, but it's looking very nice. It makes coding a lot simpler.

How about adding this engine to your list.

http://www.nevrax.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php

This is the website for the NeL engine, which is the same engine that "The Saga of Ryzom" was created on.

Believe it or not, this is a free MMORPG engine.

could you post any free software for creating morpgs, and if so could you name which ones.

if you dont want to its fine just it would be pretty awesome if you did.

MisterPoppet

Only the ones that are blatantly know to be expensive (Photoshop, 3DS Max, etc.), are really the only ones that cost money. Most things on the list are free. And if you're unsure, click on the provided links and you can find out.

Updated the thread/listing. Now free software is marked as such, and some formatting issues were resolved. Also added a handful of new engines/libraries.

Keep the suggestions coming! :)

Hello everyone, i didnt seem to see any link to RealmCrafter, its an great and easy 3D mmorpg engine, the price is around $55.
http://www.realmcrafter.com/
I guess it's still in a relatively eary stage of development, but it's fully possible to make a mmorpg with it.
EDIT: And yeah it has its own scripting language, and the engine is developed in Blitz3D. you find more information on the homepage.

Could you add this Tool to the list?

Name-Truespace

Price-3.2=Free Above 3.2=200$-400+$

Purpose-3D Animation and Design

Truespace is extremely easy to use. It only took me 3 days and I was making 3D models for school work and for games with ease!

It can save models in DirectX (.x), Playstation (.rsd), and 3DStudioASCll (.asc) format. Try it out.

It's been pretty hard to find some good FREE music composers. Took me a while but I found two that are sustainable.

http://www.anvilstudio.com/
Tried this one out. Has potential. Still trying to work out to get SoundFonts to work.

http://www.buzzmachines.com/(Link for tutorial install... You'll need it (http://strivinglife.net/wordpress/2003/11/07/230/guide-on-installing-jeskola-buzz-version-2/1/))
Very powerful and solid software... Yet stupidly confusing to construct. If only it had a decent piano roll and I knew how to export some to wav files... :(

To anyone who's still interested with 2D game development:

I am developing a 2D game engine.

Features: scriptable for full customization (usingKonsolScript (http://konsolscript.sourceforge.net))
- free and open source software
- renders through DirextX7
- handles image file (BMP, GIF, JPG) resources
- handles sound file (WAV, MIDI) resources
- handle map (layer, entity) with scripts

This game engine is updated monthly for improvements and bug fixes.

What I need is some more testers and feedback.

I cant see the DirectX-SDK in those links.
How come??Game engines are software that specializes on game development. Such softwares uses DirectX or OpenGL/OpenAL for rendering images and sounds.

Listed are only game engines not developer's SDK.
