Broken Wii Promises
September 18th, 2006
The following is a list of some of the broken promises regarding the Wii.
1. Wii would have DVD Playback - They said it at E3-2005 and it was known for a full year and mysteriously dissapeared.
2. One or Two games would be Wi-Fi compatible at Launch - Mr. Iwata at E3-2005 promised that one or two games would be Wi-Fi compatible at launch.
3. Metroid Prime 3 at launch - This has been well known for some time. Nintendo confirmed Metroid Prime 3 at launch, unfortunately this isn’t the case.
4. “We are all about the Games..etc” - Nintendo has always had a philosophy of making consoles just that, a gaming machine (hence why past consoles weren’t “mini-vans”). Now the Wii can display photos, play videos, play MP3’s, browse the web, check news and weather etc.
5. Price of Wii - George Harrison: “Price is an important factor during the fourth quarter, when everyone tries to stretch their holiday dollars. We’ll have a mass-market price for a mass-market system.” IWata: “What we’ve been repeatedly saying is that it’s going to be an affordable price point, and when we say affordable, you may want to check our past records of price points, launching price points for any past hardware.”
6. Wii won’t launch last - PS3 is launching two days before the Wii in North America while launching about a month prior to Wii’s launch in Japan.
7. (Square-Enix issue) Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (Wi-Fi enabled) will launch with Wii - Unfortunatly FF:CC sequel is no longer on the launch list from Nintendo, even in Japan.
8. Smash Bros at launch - It was hinted at E3-2005 that Iwata was pushing his team for a Wi-Fi enabled Smash Bros at launch. Now it’s pushed till after Q1 2007.
9. When you see the graphics you will say “Wow” - The problem here is that while gamers will say “wow” to the prospect of how the Wii controller/interface will work, the promise was about the graphics.
10. USB to be used for virtually any type of storage device - Apparently the focus is now on the SD Card rather than the USB ports. In fact Nintendo wants you to buy their brand of SD Cards and perhaps in the near future, USB hard-drives. Other than this it looks like fans are in confusion regarding this statement.

Nintendo has reconfirmed that the Classic Controller will cost $19.99. While many rumours were spreading around about an “all-in-one” video cable with component/composite/s-video would be bundled with the Wii, unfortunately it seems it’s just simply standard A/V (composite).
