Hmm this is how I believe this whole holiday started according to my L.A teacher. These 2 average guys that often spoke like pirates thought it would be a great idea for EVERYONE to talk like a pirate on a certain day.

After trying to get their friends into it and failing they contacted David Barry (I think that's his name). He happens to be a very funny and sarcastic columist (sp?) in newspapers with some influence among the masses and Hollywood crowd. So he spoke to some celebrities and wrote an article on it saying that today (Sept 19) should be a national holiday meant specifically for talking like a pirate.

Now keep in mind this is the first year and hell I bet most Americans have no clue it's even a holiday today. Talk like a pirate among your friends and whatnot and perhaps in 10 years of time it'll be a full fledged holiday.
