From BBC news:

Google is reported to be in talks to buy popular video-sharing website YouTube for $1.6bn (£856m).

The Wall Street Journal said discussions between the two sides were at a sensitive stage and the talks could break up.

Neither Google nor YouTube have made any comment.

Launched in February 2005, YouTube has grown quickly into one of the most popular websites on the internet, with 100 million videos viewed every day.

Previous denials

Founded by three former employees of eBay's PayPal electronic payment unit, YouTube has denied previous rumours of a takeover.

YouTube chief executive Chad Hurley said earlier this year that the company was not for sale and a future share flotation was possible.

A potential future problem for YouTube and any buyer, is that a great many users put up their favourite music videos and film clips, for which they have not gained copyright approval.

YouTube has an estimated 20 million individual visitors each month.

Pretty soon, Google is going to take over everything (hopefully not this site). In my opinion, It's a stupid idea to sell YouTube.. YouTube was doing really well, and I think it'll be stupid if they sold it to Google. I mean, as you said, 20 million people visit the site, so YouTube is bound to get a lot of money by putting up ads.

If at least half the users spend at least 1 dollar on what the ads imply, then within a few months YouTube would get over 16 Billion dollars.

Exactly. Youtube is a competitor.

Exactly. Youtube is a competitor.
Not only that, but there are millions of people who watch the videos. I just watched the news, and they say that since about 32 million watch, it's possible that youtube could get serious stocks. I'm sure google and other companies would like to get rid of competition, while earning money themselves.

Either that or take advantage of the popularity of youtube and make money for themselves...

Exactly. That's the problem with big companies. Eventually, they all get greedy, and a bit paranoid I guess you could say. They just have to stomp out competition, and take everything for themselves, without caring how it'll benefit the rest of us.

I just hope google doesn't add any extra rules to YouTube...>_>

As much as I love Google, I don't even use it. I just use it for email and check my quotes of the day. Plus Youtube is 100x better then Google Video. Hopefully Youtube won't be bought.

If it does get bought you probably won't even notice. Google wouldn't buy it and then shut it down or anything.

But they will probably add some new rules. If Google just left youtube the way it is, then they just wasted 16 billion on almost nothing. I think that Google is doing this to kill two birds with one stone, in my opinion.

If Google will not buy Youtube, it will die off. The have almost no revenue structure except for the traditional banner ad and a few cotnracts with NBC and other corporation. Do you know how much they have to pay for bandwidth each month? A million dollars. That's right. I don't know how much money Youtube is raking in, but they surely don't make a single dime out of it.

There was a site that you could check the prices of any website, including onrpg and youtube. I just can't seem to remeber it.

I've heard debate that if Google doesn't buy youtube, either Yahoo or Microsoft will by it. YouTube is like the 'innovation' of this century. IF what you said is right; that YouTube isn't making any money off this, why do you think Google is buying it?

Yeah, as long as they actauly keep Youtube and not redirect the URL to video.google.com, I'm happy with it.

Google video sucks more dick than watching TV in a van that has no antenna.

YouTube = Not going to sell since it's apparant Google probably wants to gun them down

Google ? How the **** is it worth so much? Google doesn't even really DO anything...

Seriously, think about that...

I mean, they sit there, let people put links into it.

Oooo... Not like it costs a bajillion dollars to support...

Yahoo however, actually tries.

Youtubes more popular. Question answered.

Well, if google does buy over youtube, it'll mean its much easier to find what we want, everything goes to 1 main website...
