I hate 9th grade <_<. Okay so help me out.
Problem:
An advertisement for grape drink claims that the drink contains 10% grape juice. How much pure grape juice would have to be added to 5 quarts of the drink to obtain a mixture containing 40% grape juice?

I would answer this, but I am in history class right now, and I am thining soley of that. But at 3PM WST I'll give it a shot.

Whoa, now this is somethin. I never got anything like this yet and im in honor's math. We are currently workin on cumalative frequencies and graphs.

I think I might have it. My algebra teacher is a dumbass who won't answer any questions or explain anytihng to us. I have to figure it all out on my own. I love how she just said to me "When you get back from your suspension we're having a test on chapter 3!" So I've gotta learn the entire 2nd half of the chapter on my own for the test.
Edit:
Jakuza I'm taking AP Algebra

I'm having a brain fart at the moment because I'm still thinking about the funny thing that happen in math today. But I think you put it in a equation. Change the percents to decimal. But I dunno how to set it up.

How the hell can u have an AP algebra class?
AP and IB are only for Calc and up last time I checked :/
well lets think of it this way
I will help later.
I gotsta work.
EDIT:
THis one was pretty easy.
First just make the equation balance by itself. Meaning you currently have .5 quarts juice but need 2.0 to get it to 40%. How ever once you add that extra 1.5 quarts you now have a 2/6.5 and that is not 40%. What you must do is multiply the % by the amount of quarts added. So do .4 * 1.5 = .6
Add that to 2.0 and you get 2.6 quarts which when you divide by 6.5 = .4 ;).
So you must add 2.1 quarts.

Okay so far I've kinda figured you'd need a table to lay this all out. So here's what I got:
----------------|Amt----------------Amt of Grape Juice---
----------------------------------------------------------
10% Grape Juice|5 | .10(5)
----------------------------------------------------------
100% Grape Juice|X | 1(x)
----------------------------------------------------------
40% Grape Juice|5+X | .40(5+x)
Edit: Ah..... Thanks Lothia. Lets see...
2nd edit:
Hrm.
.10(5)+1x=.40(5+x)
.5+1=(.40)x(.5)+(.40)x(x)
.5+1=2+.40x
.5+1x-.40x=2+.40x-.40x
.5+.60x=2
.5+.60x-.5=2-.5
.60x/.60x=1.5/.60
x=2.5
= / I do something wrong?

Wow AP Algebra in 9th grade... I'm taking AP Geometry in 9th grade... but whatever someone already answered the question. Get 1/4 of 5 quarts then find 10% of that (I think).... P.S. A good way to piss off your teach is to ask how you could use this in the real world. They'll have no clue because they don't know.

Wow... ok, that was probably the dumbest thing you could have said involving this question which obviously deals with the real world lmfao. It's grape juice, dude. Maybe say that when someones asking about a quadratic equation or something, at least the teacher will have to take a while to figure it out. lol
And I'll second that, Lothia. Only college credit math classes here are College Algebra and Calc, I think just those two.

Wait, you learn that in 9th grade? I learned it in 8th...but I guess the schools decided to force us to learn different things. Stupid school...
As far as I know, this is called 'Weighted Averages' which is a weird name for it. I did the problem, and I don't think Saint is wrong, unless we're both wrong...

I'm sorry.. I just haven't been in a situation where making grape juice required me to get out my pad and pencil... Geez seriously who the hell would? And since when does grape juice deal with the real world. Every math subject past pre algebra is a waste unless you plan to go into a math fiend of expertiece IMO. And if you want to start working some hard core formula to make some koolaid by all means do so, me... I'll just read the directions on the back. kthxbye

Wait, are you in Alg 2 or Alg 1?
I took Alg 1 last year, and I'm in Geometry this year (8th grade). I used to think that being in MypIB (Kind of like the IB program for middle school) was special, but I've been feeling pretty stupid lately
And Endless, some schools go Alg 1 -> Alg 2 -> (Something else)
While other schools go Alg 1 -> (Something else, for me Geometry) -> Alg 2
Supposively Alg 1 helps in Geometry. And yes, Math is pointless in about 90% of jobs.

I think we have different books. My old Algebra 1 covers Saint's question in chapter 2. O_o
I'm afraid I disagree with you Ska. There are a lot of jobs that require you to know math. Accountants, programmers, teachers, office people, engineers, etc. Math is something you should learn. If you play sports, you'll find that understanding degree's sometimes helps your skills. I know somethings in math are useless, but there are a lot of good info in there that will help you get a good job. If a subject is pointless, I'd say that it's History. I mean, who cares if you can memorize all the presidents, and all those dates? That's not going to get you the best of jobs.

Why do we go to school? In the future all jobs will be taken by robots anyways. So lets stop the education now to prevent the robots later.
Thats like saying science is unimportant. So what if Oxygen is diatomic or if electrons form a cloud around the neuclei (sp). Or P.E... Why take P.E. if an hour later your going to the caf to eat a slice of pizza and fries along with a gatorade filled with sodium. Don't get me wrong I love PE, I'm 14, 5'11'', 140lbs. and kickin it. Or... English. Who cares if the direct object is what the verb is doing something to. Or if an ancedote is a short story. Seriously. They send us to school because we're all going to end up obese when we get older so we might as well be smart fat people.

5(10) + x(100) = y(40)
50 + 100x = 40y
x = y - 5
50 + 100(y -5) = 40y
50 + 100y - 500 = 40y
100y - 450 = 40y
60y = 450
y = 7.5
7.5 - 5 = 2.5
5(10) + 2.5(100) = y(40)
50 + 250 = 40y
300 = 40y
7.5 = y
Algebra's pretty lame, but Geometry will suck your soul out of your face. It's that boring.

Oh come on this is easy...
5quarts * 10% = 50 / 500% Grape juice
40% of 500% = 200 of 500
Answer = 150% pure grape juice or something like that
So in algebra that would be
Do now translate that to algebra! =X My mind's stuck on Sim city 4 right now. =O

Well, History is important for certain types of jobs, like Anthropology and Archaeology.

If you were being sarcastic here, then disregard this, but if you were being serious, you're completely ignorant. School is supposed to teach us what we need to go into college and eventually graduate to get a career. If you fail High School, then you have fun working at McDonald's for the rest of your life. Also, school teaches us a lot of social aspects as well. It helps us communicate and get out in the world, etc. I think you get my point.

One would find that math does not only teach you how to... Do math. But it also teaches you how to think, yes, it does actually teach you how to think out of the box. I myself started learning basic algebra last year ( Gr 6 ) now in grade seven it is somewhat more advanced as in compliments and such, algebric number lines and tons of new symbols.
I have no idea how to figure out that question though, just wanted to add a few things to the topic, but that teacher of your's is a total ***. Report her to the principal or something.

And do you get F's or just plain D's in math? Thats the dumbest thing I've ever seen. As for Mr First Name Basis,
Go ahead. You're correct. Don't bother with english or math anymore. Oh and remember: I like my fries homestyle, not curly.

I know this is a bit of a bump but...
Dude, I didn't say I was going to quit math or anything. I was just pointing out the obvious: most jobs don't require the math that you learn above pre-algebra. BTW Math is one of my strongest subjects... I plan to take AP Trig by the end of my senior year (that or early dismissal).
P.S. Curly FTW
