RAPPELZ

This is my rating on the BETA so far:

Graphics: The graphics are very nice for a free game. It has realistic water as well as a nice glow effect. The character textures are nice, but the landscape textures can be bland due to its repeated pattern on a large scale map.The trees and vegetation (not including the Asura map) are very nice. While fighting it has some cool effects while using skills. Some skills have the same or very similar presentation as another, but over all there is a nice variety of animations. This game can be hard on older computers due to a memory leak problem the game has. 8/10

Customization/Equipment: This is a big problem with game in my opinion. Although you do get to choose from multiple races you can find youself looking the same as many other characters. There isn't much eqipment at all, and the points where you change your equipment are very spread out. You will find yourself wearing the same thing for long periods of time. Weapons are the same. There are multiple ways to upgrade your epuipment and it is fairly easy to figure out. You can upgrade armors (for example) in two different ways. The first one is getting its level upgraded at the Blacksmith. The second is adding a "Cube" to upgrade its Enchantment Level. So the armor will be +4(Enchantment Level) Silver Armor (The skin or type of armor)Lv2(The Blacksmith upgrade level.)This can also be done with weapons. 5/10

Skills: There are different ways to play your character. The skills are set up like a tree. You must upgrade a certain skill to a certain point before using the next one, and there are multiple branches you can choose to upgrade. Compared to other free MMORPGs the game has a superb skill system, but compared to P2P or B2P the skills are a little on the short side. Your level does not determine if you can or cannot learn new skills. You gain Job Points as you fight and you can raise you Job Level to learn more skills. More skills are givin every 5 Job Levels. 8/10

Gameplay: This game is a huge grind. Almost every quest requires you to kill a certain amount of monsters and then report back for your reward. Having said that, there are an unlimited amount of quests. A certain person in each home town will give you a new set of monsters to kill after you have killed the last bunch. Sadly, all gives is money as a reward. Also you can complete other hometown quests to make leveling a little easier. The grind seems more difficult than many other MMORPGs. You face challenges and must strategize plans with your party on how to kill a certain monster. Overall the game is pure grinding hopefully to change after BETA. 6/10

Community/PvP/Hacking: You might be asking yourself why I tied these three sections together. Well, because people whine about being PKed, and the bots are PKed by players. There is also an anti-bot system in which they put "Auto Traps" in the game. They are considered monsters and when bots dont know the difference they attack them. People also whine and argue because some people decide not to read the rules and attack the Auto Trap and get sent to the "Abyss". They can't get out unless a a GM lets them out. There is a Non-PvP server if you do not like the fact that someone can run up you kill you at anytime, but if you do like living on the edge you may like the PvP server. There are parties and guilds just like in other MMORPGs. The guilds are very simple. There isn't really any advantage in having a guild except to have friends and such, and to get PKed by people who dont like your guild. Overall the community is just like any other free game, except people try to kill you if they get mad. 6/10

Learning Curve: There is a island you train on. I suggest you read what people have to tell you before asking and getting flamed by the community. If you do this you can get off to a great start. Trainee Island takes an hour or so to get off so I guess that can be the learning curve. 9/10

Thats all I can think of to say right now. I have high hopes for this game. I hope you all will try it out. Maybe you will see potential in it like I do.

In the Community/PvP/Hacking paragraph you talk about poeple botting. I heard of poeple botting in this game and I dont see how its possible with the auto traps.

I guess they have updated bots that tell the character not to attack Auto Traps.

BPMGamer, I agree with everything you said. It's one of the grindyest(if that's a word) free mmo's I've ever played. The lags really bad sometimes, too.

the thing why the grind is even more terrible than, for example SRO is because each enemy is being focused on it's on, rather than grouping orietated. It tooks far to long to kill one monster, and in the end, the reward for that monster is far to little compared to what you need to advance in level. See it as SRO XP-reqs while taking 2 minutes per monster with no multihitting. I think if they would actually overhaul the entire leveling system, it would be a nice game. I still don't understand why leveling systems like the one Oblivion and morrowind are using are so uncommon in modern mmo's. Its the perfect way of creating a unique character since it would develop certain major skills, the combinations would be endless?!

Anyone considering trying out Rappelz would do well to check out BPM's critique of it thus far. He hits the nail on the head with it.

The game does have a lot of potential, but I wonder what'll happen to it with gPotato at the helm?

( It is gPotato, right? ) :hmm:

I disagree. I took less time to kill monsters my level in Rappelz than in SRO.
In Rappelz monsters die fast enough if you upgrade your weapon frequently which is a MUST, and if you use force chips you can kill monsters in less than a minute.

If you do all the quests in Rappelz you level pretty fast. SRO for me was a huge monotonous grindfest which I was thankful to quit. Rappelz was a passing interest which quickly faded.

ok, in my opinion, rappelz is really underrated. I seriously think it is one of the best free mmo's out there. Theres lots of quests, the graphics are good, the pet system is easy to use, and there arent really any bugs. My only problem with it is the lack of customization for characters.

But really, all you people who don't like rappelz, can you honestly give me a better free MMO? The only game that i've played that really compares to it is SRO, but in my opinion SRO isn't as good. The grind in rappelz doesnt seem as bad in comparison, perhaps thats just cause you're always always buying new skills, whereas you don't get to do that as much in SRO... honestly the only thing that SRO has going for it IMO is the setting and the graphics. The setting in that game is by far one of the coolest i've ever seen in a video game, period, but still it kinda gets old after awhile.

i dunno, i like rappelz a lot. I can't really put my finger on why i like it, but for some reason i do. even if it's not particularly gripping, it still is a good way to pass time

I definately agree... I downloaded Rappelz last night just to check it out. The way you gain skills is way cool. The JP system and the leveling of skills and job levels is a comfortable change in any MMORPG, unlike any ive seen really. I really think its a game u will enjoy a lot, or down right hate it... And I really enjoy it.

It's brand new too, so I'm sure after a few updates its going to get some cool addons and stuff. Like Phantasy Star Universe... It was cool when it launched, but soooo shallow. One big update and they unlocked a whole new planet, along with an extra mission branch for every other planet, making more leveling areas and parties to join all around. Just give Rappelz some time and I'm sure it could quite possibly be the most entertaining free 3d mmorpg! The potential is there, and I betcha its going to be tapped in no time :).

I'm gonna try and stick with it... who knows.. It could be the next Lineage 2 and maybe one day I can be the big high level dickhead who kills the lowbies!! nahhh jk... but its lookin good and I'm rambling now. Its just my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own, but give it time then we can truly pair it up against other games that have been launched for a while.

This game grabbed me for a while. I do suggest playing it, but I also suggest you get into the PvP aspect and have fun talking with the community. Getting into a guild and then looking for members in rival guilds is fun because the PvP is open and you are not limited to who you can kill. Also the community will hunt you if you go around and kill for the fun of it. So most of the fun in the game is made by the community. If you do what I suggested this game can hold you over until Cabal comes out. Maybe even longer.:D

Rappelz plays nice because of the fluid animations, unique to mmo's it seems. I haven recently been playing in a party with people i know, that adds quite a value to rappelz. my recommendation is to get some friends to play along with, it suddenly becomes far more enjoyable

Then again that is the POINT of MMORPGs in the first place is it not? To make friends and play TOGETHER. People who go out and and play games for 20 minutes and stop never realize that they are supposed to make friends. Not be antisocial and try to play by yourself. Single Player RPGs are for that kinda thing.

no, what you describe is what an MMORPG SHOULD be, but it isn't. in most mmo's you witness more soloing rather than partying

Seriously, don't just throw your opinion on the table, add some spices and stuff so we can see if you aren't just a regular moron with no sense of judgement. (sorry if that sounded like flaming, it wasn't)
