I think they are the same, in my view..
Well, its like

In my view ;
"clan"
Group of people who treat each other as 'brothers/friends' that they are willing to share pain together, joy together.. etc etc..

"guild"
Group with the same trade or pursuits, more of in the medieval times.

Wikipedia - A clan is a group of people united by kinship and descent, which is defined by perceived descent from a common ancestor. Even if actual lineage patterns are unknown, clan members nonetheless recognize a founding member or apical ancestor. As kinship based bonds can be merely symbolical in nature some clans share a "stipulated" common ancestor, which is a symbol of the clan's unity. When this ancestor is not human, this is referred to as animallian totem. Generally speaking, kinship differs from biological relation, as it also involves adoption, marriage, and fictive genealogical ties. Clans can be most easily described as sub-groups of tribes and usually constitute groups of 7000 to 10 000 people.

In order words, Clan is like a group of people with related -family branches.

A guild is an association of people of the same trade or pursuits (with a similar skill or craft), formed to protect mutual interests and maintain standards of workmanship and ethical conduct. Historically guilds were formed as mutual benefit societies or small business associations, A guild was a trade union of sorts, since each crafter was a self-employed individual artisan or part of a small craft shop or co-operative. Guilds exist in modern and medieval incarnations. A historian's view of guilds tends to be colored by one's view of political economy, since the whole history of trade, technology, intellectual property, regulated professions, social security, and professional ethics are entwined with the history of the guilds in Europe.

Guild could be described by a club.

Zaku is talking about guilds and clans in games, not in real life. Back on topic, guilds and clans are bascially the same thing.

With the powers vested inside me, I now pronouce you... (What, this isn't a wedding, it's a funeral? Oh, sorry.)

Well anyway, I now pronouce this topic R.I.P., it shall be missed by though who seek the truth in clans and guilds, even though they're pratically the same thing in MMOs.

Icy, just because you have answered a question doesn't mean that others can't add on to it. They should be allowed to give their opinions on that matter.

In my opinion, Clans and Guilds aren't the same. Clans are groups of people who are part of a group, and these numbers can be quite big.

Guilds on the other hand consist of a few members who like to play together and have the same idea's of 'fun'

Really? For some reason I thought it was the other way around.

Well, in a lot of games, when they mention clan, it's usually a giant number of people, like in WoW. I generally think of clans has being many famlily members of people close to each other forming something of a little 'family'. Within clans, you might have several guilds.

I might be wrong so correct me.

I just assumed that a "Guild" was something similar to a group of people who do the same job, as in medieval times, eg. an archer guild or a Barbarian guild, while a clan was a group of people (not necessarily of the same "role") who play with each other and help each other out.
