Sony to sell PS3\PS2 software directy.
SCE Europe VP of Technology confirmed that Sony will be creating a website that will directly sell video games, movies and applications for the PlayStation 3 and PS2. You can either purchase the items or download the content directly to your PS3 or PS2.
This will save Sony at least 30% of the retail value for the software being sold. There strategy is to eliminate the distributor and retail margins.
"The site will have movie trailers, 1080p Blue Ray movies and game clips as well as full movie and game titles for direct purchase by a consumer. We believe that this will appeal to PS3 users while also allowing new developers to market their developments to the PS3 user."
"A big benefit of the site is that we can make available games that can be sold around the world. Irish Gaelic Football is a typical example of a local game that while selling well in Ireland is also available to Irish people around the world without distributors and retailers having to take the risk of carrying the stock" said Holman.
PS3 - 500MB download limit, Xbox 360 - 50MB download limit.
The director of external development from Sony Computer Entertainment Santa Monica, John Hight, was quoted saying “We’ve arbitrarily set a limit of 500MB to keep download times reasonable. Since we’ve got plenty of HD space we can accommodate even bigger games and a lot of them.”
Microsoft's download limit for their Xbox Live Arcade games is 50MB. Microsoft has stated in the past that once larger memory cards become available, that they would increase their limit.
Killzone PS3 to have 120 developers.
Guerilla Games have confirmed that Killzone PS3 will cost more to develop than the most expensive file in Dutch history, Black Book. The movie cost $21 million to develop, and Killzone director Arjan Brussee was quoted on saying, ""Our budget tops Black Book. We're working on the biggest multimedia project in Dutch history."
The high cost for the game is due to the labor invested into the graphically demanding next-gen video games. "Work that used to take someone a week now takes him a month" said Brussee. There are 120 developers working on Killzone PS3, which is three times more than the amount of people who work on the first installation for the game. Half of the development team is from outside the Netherlands. The other factor which is making the game expensive to develop is the location of it. Killzone PS3 will be available in twenty different languages. Brussee feels this will pay off in the long run, "You sell 30 to 40 percent more [units] with a translated version."
Sony COMFIRMS PS4
Vice President of Technology for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Paul Holman confirmed that there will be a PlayStation 4, and that it would be released sometime after 2010 in an interview with SmartHouse.
"To say that there will be no PS4 because of a management change is a bit far fetched" he said.
Until the release of the PlayStation 4, there will be several upgrades for the PS3.
Several PS3 upgrades to be made.
Sony will release a series of firmware upgrades that will give the PlayStation 3 more media centre capability, while still allowing for the introduction of third party applications and hardware from now until the PS4 is released.
Vice President of Technology for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Paul Holman, said that game developers are now realizing that the PlayStation 3’s cell processor has a heap more processing headroom than they initially anticipated and that this was resulting in the development of new gaming capabilities.
By March 2007 when the PS3 PAL version is launch in Europe and Australia, there will be additional firmware upgrades and should be at least 20 new games to be available.
"The PS3 will become as much a media centre for the home as it is a gaming machine and the introduction of new capabilities such as the ability to download third party operating systems to the PS3 will see several new capabilities added to the system. We have already seen one European Linux application running on the PS3 and over the next few months we know of several others that plan to launch a product for the PS3" said Holman.
Holman also stated that sometime next year there will be a keyboard and mouse that would be compatible with the PS3 which will allow for easier access to the internet.
