Does anyone know of an RPG that can connect to the internet and play together with friends via LAN? It would also have to be able to play single player with the same character as you would LAN and no not titan quest...

Diablo 1 and 2 might be up your alley, but you'd need an internet connection at all times to play. It's not an MMO as most people think, a player will create a game and up to 7 other people can join in to play with you. If it's a public game, anyone can join, but you can put in passwords so that only select players can come in and play with you. Hell, if you feel like playing alone, just make a really obscure password for the room, and boom - single player time.

EDIT: There is a single player mode, but that character can not be transfered into an online realm.

I think you can if you play on Open battlenet, but someone will have to confirm this as I don't have D2 to check at the moment.

You can transfer characters from single player to internet or lan.

For gamespy arcade though the characters have to be made fresh or exist in the gamespy vault.

That's a negative. You can't transfer single player characters to open, or closed battle.net.
