Here's a better idea.

Spend two years. Learn basic coding.

Making a game is nothing for hobbiests. Go to a college that teaches game-design.

Is a 2 dimensional first person shooter even possible? :-/ The term "first-person" implies 3D, unless there's something I'm missing here.

Weren't the first FPSes kind of 2d? Although it was in the environment could be considered 3d, the graphics were 2dish, I don't know if thats what we are talking about. Or maybe he just meant a 2D shooter.

First mistake: Thinking making a game will be crazy fun
Second mistake: no programming knowledge, trying to rely on a "game maker"
Third mistake: Not going to college to for game design.

Three strikes.

Loled at that.

Don't expect to make something decent from starting off with no experience

Just let him do what he wants. Putting online would be somewhat complicated. I will rate your work so do your best =)

Yes SF is horrible enough to be made by that crap.

Are you kidding?:) Doom was the first 3D game, if memory serves me correctly.

Yes it was the first 3D game. But, alot of noobs say otherwise.

Well acually, ive played a 2d FPS. It was coded with BYOND (a 2d online game engine). The map would change every step, which created ALOT of lag, but it was the first 2d FPS ive seen.

It was such a classic, they put it on the ds. (not a official company, just a group so it's a homebrew)

Well, not completely 3D.

It was one of the first to use 3D mapping. Everything else, however, was 2D vectoring.

Non-the-less. Bad example.

If you would like to create a First Person Shooter game, I advise you to first learn either C# or C++ as a programming language. If you are just doing all this for fun, you should try the XNA engine by Microsoft which is built for the amateur game developers.

Google for a few C#/C++ tutorials, then you can visit Riemer's site (http://www.riemers.net/) and learn to get started with basic 3d(Direct3D/OpenGL/XNA) games.

Here is the link to the XNA homepage:http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/xna/default.aspx

If you have no patience in learning a programming language and decide to use a "fps creator", I suggest you to give up.

Dont you people get it? 2d means automaticly no first person shooter you need a 3d world to even have the option to go first person it was kinda third person so why not talk about SHOOTING GAMES instead of first person shooters only

Missing indeed.

Your wrong. =/

My proof? I shall provide.

Arcana, First person SNES RPG. Yes I know we're talking about FPS but obviously if I show theres 2D first person view it would clear away some of the questions.

People underestimate 2D, when its very flexible. Yeah, to make a 2D FPS would probably be more tedious then a 3D one, buts its quite possible.

Fantastic, but there's just one problem, that game is 3D. I can point out the dimensions right now, length, width, and depth.

Read a book about C++ or C# . Or if you're young go to an Game-Design school (that's the fun part of being young for me)

Normal books teaching C#/C++ do NOT actually teach how you make 3d games and programs. I've been programming these 2 languages for some time and I bought a book for each of them. Both of these books majorly talks about Console details and things that you can do with command prompt. Other than that, my C# book teaches classes and object oriented programming. Creating a game isn't as easy as you think. You don't just read a book and you're god in programming.

As for going to Game-Designing Schools, not everyone can afford the time and money to do such things. Many people, like me, aren't even old enough to go to college yet. I would suggest someone to accquire a basis on the language C# first. It is a comparably simple language easier to manipulate than C++. Create some windows forms with 2d graphics first, and THEN start 3d graphics-eventually moving onto C++ after you get the hang out of 3d programming.

That's 3D. It only uses tiles that give off a 2D feel.

EDIT:
Here is a game that is actually 2D.

Ok this is my first quote i ever done .. in my whole life..
anyways dont give us a big **** you in the
face with no image avaible.. every first person shooter uses a 3dwordl the dept thingy if not its not a first person shooter
the first shooting games ever SHOOTING games ever not fps where side scrolling the examples of side scroll shooters are of course METAL SLUG and those are not fps cause your not looking out his ****ing eyes can you even imaging to look tru some side scrol charater eyes? see its not possible on anyway

I would consider making a 2d shooter myself. I even got tutored by a friend of mines in making games. It should be no problem. Now the multiplayer part, thats the real challenge.

Image wasn't available? Well that was on the website, not me.

Anyway, your post has no back-bone. Simply because an FPS doesn't always have to allow you to move. For it to qualify as a First Person Shooter it has to put you in the first person perspective and allow you to shoot. Amirite? Or amirong?

Its 2D, Super nintendo does not support 3D. Its actualy the opposite of what you say, Its 2D, it uses the tiles to give off a 3D feel.
