Mechs are infernal, period. They'd have to make mobile suits like Gundam for anything of that sort to be worth using in military combat.

Oh absolutely. Mechs are cool, but logically, they're completely impractical for military purposes. And actually, they are working on exoskeleton suits for soldiers. Very cool stuff.

I love going to Anime and game forums (I'm not mentioning anything on this site, so don't anybody get offended) about Gundam, Ghost in the Shell, and Mechwarrior. They are all filled with people who know "The future of combat."

The only fictional device I've ever seen that may one day have a military equivalent are starships, and even then only if we end up populating other worlds and end up having inter-planetary wars. Even the famed space fighterplane would be mostly useless in reality if war ever came to that.

But I agree, I would love to pull up to work in one of those, rickety as they are.

Not necessarily. They could always have wheel mechs with reinforced armor, and Smart Missiles (anti-air missiles that counter incoming air strikes).

The very same Smart Missile that America equipped to their Smart Artillery. You know, the artillery that reloads, targets, and shoots by itself, as well as protect itself from missiles (I.E. rocket launcher munitions).

It's not that they won't survive in war. It's just that they need certain armaments and technologies to survive on the battle fields (or to be deployed in small arms combat).

You can go to a military forum and you're just as likely to find people that know a lot about games as well. I, for one, have several friends in military intelligence. I also study quantum and theoretical physics as well as genetics. I'm also a writer :)2 You shouldn't pass blanket judgements like that.

I didn't mean it to be a blank judgement, I only meant that I find it amusing how some people (Not all) on some forums (Not just game or Anime ones, although I mentioned those because they have the majority of the people I was talking about) like to think how someday the military is going to create Gundam robots and such for combat. I didn't mean to state that Anime and game forums are the only ones with people like that (And before anyone takes offense, I do not mean this as an insult), only that, because of the influence of the ever popular Mecha-animes and Mech-warrior video games, Anime and game forums seem to have the most of them.

All I meant was that I find the whole idea of Mechs and Gundams in a real-life battlefield funny as hell. What can a Gundam do that a well equipped chopper can't? Very little, as far as I can see.
