I don't think you'll be THAT alone, but there are a lot of people on cantha and elona you won't be able to meet

There's still people playing it; alot of people are usually taking their expansion characters over to complete the Prophecies missions.

The late-game missions in Prophecies can be ghost towns now that the population is spread throughout three chapters.
Get into a guild and/or establish a network of friends. I'm sure they would help you out, especially like gloomba38 said, they'll be bringing their non-Prophecies characters through the missions too.
Join pick up groups (PUG). It will be a horrible/amusing experience in general, as some of these are a massacre waiting to happen, but there will be diamonds in the rough.... and how else can you meet people to be friends with in the first place? :D
You can always do it with henchmen too. In case your guildies/friends are occupied elsewhere, the henchmen will do in a pinch. At least they don't ragequit, get disconnected, bring useless skills, complain, and generally follow your commands.

Yeah, it isn't that deserted these days, with the dervishes and assassins running around completing the tyria missions. It's the slowest gameplay of all the three campaigns too, so you can pick up the learning curves easier.

To tell the truth, I completed like 90% of the game with just henchmen... did every Tyria mission with henchmen including Ring Of Fire, (Try finding a group for Hell's Precipice -.-) all the Factions missions except 2, (The Eternal Grove and Raisu Palace) and every Nightfall mission, only henchmen/heroes. And I'm not the best of players.
Honestly, I did -worse- on missions I took actual people with... due to the reasons quoted, and just because henchmen/heroes actually attack called targets instead of random stuff, like most human groups.

I just bought it a couple weeks ago, and it actually is fairly populated. You should really try it out...

Add to that the upcoming implementation of Hard Mode, you'll see more people coming back to Tyria and Cantha. Granted that you can't join them on Hard Mode if you're not qualified (i.e. going for "normal mode"), but there's bound to be some kind soul who'll lend a hand.
And I meet people in Tyria who say it's their first GW game, and first character.... you are not alone :D
