Unfuantunly not much out on the market at the moment. I would stick with Counter strike source (or any other Source games), battlefield 2. Thats about the only FPS games to bother with, that acually need a computer thats better then a 5 yr old computer. If you find a good one tell me!

S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Oblivion (Shivering Isles), Supreme Commander, Command and Conquer 3, Medieval 2, Half-Life 2 (and Portal, etc. when they come out), Neverwinter Nights 2, etc.
There are a lot of good B2P games out there. I recommend STALKER the most, however.

My computer is about 5 years old and it runs CS Source just fine not a perfect 100 FPS but it runs smooth. its 5 years old but the graphics card is a high end card. The only thing in my computer that needs to be upgraded is the processor.

Then again, my current card is factory sent, +3 years old.

OMFG! IT RUNS SO FAST,I LOVE IT. I can't give you specifics yet because it's not internet enabled, but i got the new 8800. my new screen can't even handle the graphics it's pumping out. :( :( XD :p :(
neothaka
04-12-2007, 07:54 AM
please, don't exegarate. 'your screen can't produce the graphics it pumps out' ... you play with Vsync on or what?
and to be honest, there are a lot pc that still use a DX9.0 graphic card that can have equal or better performance. The concept is easy, there no games available that actually make use of the 8800GTS/GTX features.
F.e. the strongest current gen ATI cards in SLI performe remarkably better than a 8800GTX
shevrock
04-12-2007, 12:36 PM
Well those are the best graphics i've ever seen come from any computer of mine, so i'm allowed to exaggerate slightly. but the screen really isn't good enough. it get really pixelated when i play a good game.
neothaka
04-12-2007, 03:43 PM
don't take pixelating lightly. That doesn't necesarely mean your monitor is not good enough, but i can might as well be a problem with your videocard.
If your entire screen is pixelating and you experience lock ups, random freezes, reboots, than your videocard is malfunctioning or your power supply is insufficient.
So where exactly does iit pixelate?

usualy where the most action is taking place. like a gun shooting, or a bridge being blown to shards or wood and metal. also i'll have it hooked up to the internet in 20 min so i'll post exact specs.

ok, that's not a good move. You shouldn't use an 8800GTS with a athmon 3500+.
8xxx nest gen series were made to work with dual core CPU's.
your videocard is WAY ahead of your cpu, so if you experience lag (like in slow motion gameplay) that is simply because your CPU can't follow up with what your graphic card is producing.
and your RAM, what type is it? DDR? DDR2? if it's DDR, i strongly suggest you beed it up to 2048mb
and i dare to bet that your power supply is way not good enough to feed that thing. Tell me how much Watt it has, you can read it on the box of your power supply. i would say take a minimum 500 Watt (not peak) power supply.
Those graphics card are massive power consumers, trust me. also, a simple question, do you have a direct from your power supply to your videocard? (there is a PCIE-to-PS molex at the end of your graphics card, you HAVE to connect those, usually the molex cable is delivered with the gfx card, but these days it doesn't because most power supplies are already equipped with such a molex connector).
anyway, i had major pixelating issues before with my 7900GT because i didn't had a connection to my power supply, i had to buy the little cable seperately in holland .. but it's a vital connection, without it, your card only get 25% of the needed power

what's wrong with a 7900GT?
imo the best thing you can do is always buy one the best cards from the previous generation.
don't tell me you're going to buy an 8800 just for the driver :s
also, you're wasting money if you do so. there are no games that actually use the full potential of the 8800GTX/S and when they do, the price will have lowered a lot and ATI will have released their probably, a lot better cards.
and 300W, perhaps it is sufficient for you, but i need a minimum of 400W to get this machine running, the power consumption of a 7900GT is a lot more compared to a 9700GS. And next to the videocard, there's the SATA, CPU, that all require quite some power.

more pixels? :) i'm not sure what you mean by that. If you mean video resolution, i think the GS and GT don't differ, max resolution depends on the maximum allowed resolution of your monitor.
The diffirence between a GS and GT is that a GT has a better core and ram clock. Mine runs standard on 470/.... Mhz

i checked newegg both has same core etc :X
but XFX sell their card Overclocked high :X etc..
my card is at 450/1320. i overclocked to 541/1320 but everytime i restart PC
goes to normal :( gets annoying. u should overclock urs a bit :) but if u run games fine no need too :)
I had a 7600GS and IS VERY weak.. the 7600GT way better lol.
but i bought a 7900GS instead of 7600GT..
they same prices.
i got it just to play my old games smoothly :P
I'm happy with my X1600 PRO 512MB from Powercolor, without any kind of overclocking, with great FPS and graphics.3.0 Pixel Shaders rock the house :).And it only cost 120€!If i wanted to wait,i could had gotten a Sapphire edition card. But i couldn't wait to order online, anyway.
Too bad my CPU's such a drag.No matter,in 2 years or so,i'll make a custom computer.1000€ should make an awsome computer,anyway.

that's an opinion, FEAR has a great single player story. One of the most impressive ones too.
It's a cliché, but its true, play it late at night, in a dark room with good quality sound, you'll be scared like hell sometimes.
Anyway, my graphic card happens to be XFX as well, and it has 470/1500 mhz standard. I don't think that your graphics card is overclocked, but the performance also comes from the amount of pixel pipelines en vertex shaders, together with the type of RAMDAC. does your GS use DDR2 or DDR3?
And i don't need to overclock my graphic card, it's a great one for now, it can handle basicly everything i have atm, if i have framerates in a particular game, then i blame my rather old CPU (athlon 3800+). I have enough money to get a dual core, to get one in june.
Besides, overclocking is not healthy. and if your pc resets your overclock stats, it probably means that you have put in unstable values.
Eventhough overclocking makes your graphic card performe better, a lot of games are actually quite sensitive to overclocking and will cause heavy issues with overclocked videocards.
