If I Remember correctly Death & Rebirth... the first half summarizes the series, and the 2nd half is the ending...

The director didn't like that ending or some crap so he made End of Evangelion... which I suppose is the real ending.

Fabian knows far more about this than I as Evangelion isn't one of the series I particulary liked.

I'm a huge Eva fan, hueg liek a ps3, and there are many confusions about not only the story itself, but the making of it too.

The ending seen in "End of Eva" was written originally as part of the story line and script from the very beginning. Thing is, at that time GainaX was a very small studio and didn't have the budget to do such an extravagant ending. Anno had to cut the ending short.They actully went over-budget just to complete the series, dipping into the pocket books of Anno and other people on the project. But after the series was complete and it became really popular they made the original ending, as Anno intended it to be.
That ending is called "End of Evangelion"

Death and Rebirth is a re-examination of the characters, a prep for End of Eva because the whole series is about the characters, who they are as people on the inside and outside.
They made a refresher, a quick case-study of all the characters.


On the original release of D&R after the character re-summery there was about 20 min of EoE. What they had completed at it's release.
They later released the complete EoE in as a single movie.


Now, it's not incorrect that Anno did get death threats. He got many, which certinaly didn't help with his depression. But thats not the reason behind EoE. It was there from the start, it's just they didn't have the money for it.
(wiki states that he suffered from depression "prior to creating the series", but thats incorrect. The hight of his depression was actually through-out the creation of this series)
