VA Tech needs to get a warning system in place. The second shooting could have been prevented if they would have warned students immediately and if the police hadn't gone on the assumption that the shooter had "left campus and possibly the states..." Its just horrible. Its now the worst shooting in US History.

There is a warning system in place, I visited Vtech, they have an amazing alarm system. Just no one pressed it because what would you do under that much adrenaline, you don't think while fleeing.

All you know is, he has a gun, you dont.

I'm talking about an alert via text message or e-mail. The VA staff sent out the e-mail 2 hours after the first shooting and at that time the 29 other students were being gunned down.

edit/ @ AthlaS

They weren't able to run away. The students reported that the gunmen locked the doors to the building in which he did most of the killing using chain. Some were forced to play dead so they wouldn't be killed.

I live and Virginia and was pretty shocked to hear this news after coming home early from school today. Rumors are that it started with a boyfriend and girlfriend conflict. Supposedly, some Asian guy found his girl sleeping with another guy, so he shot the girl and this guy in their dorms. How this resulted in so many other killings I'm not sure. This is just a rumor.

So all of America is stupid because of a few retards don't know how to hold in their anger? I don't know about every American, but 100% of the ones I've met would never think of shooting anyone, including myself. Just because it's easier to buy guns here doesn't mean that everyone has one, or has the intent to use it on someone.

Also, America isn't the only country where murders take place. We aren't the only ones that have guns. I don't understand how you can justify your hate for Americans by saying we're barbaric because a couple of ****ed up kids decide to gun down innocent by standers. 99.9% of us aren't like that, stop stereotyping.

But america is the only country in the world that has the right to bear arms enshrined in its constitution.

Yes it made sense in the early days of colonialism since the average frontier family had to dend themselves from wild animals, lawless brigands and the native americans. It also meant that there was a large pool of civilians who could be called up to military service at short notice since they were already armed, its cheaper to have a militia that equips itself.

But now the right to bear arms is obsolete and no longer needed. Just like slavery and gender roles have been phased out the right to bear arms is another redundant aspect of the past that needs to be addressed. But nobody is going to tackle it properly because the NRA is so hugely powerful and theres probably not anyone alive who could practically deprive an average hick yokel of his weapon.

Nobody is saying that murder doesnt happen in other countries, thats just ignorant. But the states is frequented by these kinds of atrocities and they are always painfully similar in nature.

oh wow out of a whole class of 20 something people only 4 made it out alive.

The gunman at Norris Hall, who police say took his own life, was not carrying identification and has not been identified.

Freshman Erin Sheehan told the university newspaper she was in German class at Norris when the gunman peeked in twice "like he was looking for someone" and then started shooting.

The students tried to blockade the door, but the shooter -- dressed in "a Boy Scout-type outfit" -- made it inside.

"I saw bullets hit people's body," Sheehan told The Collegiate Times. "There was blood everywhere. People in the class were passed out -- I don't know maybe from shock from the pain. But I was one of only four that made it out of that classroom.

I was shocked at seeing this... Kinda like bowling for colombine(spelling?) all over again, just much "worse"(if you can call psychos on a killingspree bad by different degrees...)...

My gf saw tons of police, commando cars and full mayhem outside the american embassy in norway today long before the news arrived here in norway, so I was like "ok, what shit is going down now?". I was expecting some kind of new terrorist attack or something, but when nothing was mentioned on the news, I thought, maybe they're just trippin', but this is truly extreme. Though, I still don't know why the embassy here in norway is fretting and adding security because a student went buck-wild over in the states...

Im disappointed though, at the fact that non of this was mentioned on the nine o'clock news here in norway, mere 4 hours away, when clearly this was known some while ago... I guess it goes to show how slow norwegian reporters are to pick things up...

I truly hope they don't try to blame this on some kind of stupid mass-medium like games, books or rap-music... Im tired of this crap...

Regarding the "hating" aimed at america for these kind of situation, I guess most countries should shut up. All countries have psychopaths, it's just the fact that america has a large population and so there are more psychos... But then again, you don't hear alot about things going to the same degree in other countires as in the U.S. Happenings like these are pretty unike... Anyways, as people said earlier, getting guns in the U.S is very simple, and as reporters have said, he was in the possession of what they call an "ungodly amount of ammunition", and that's something you wouldn't easily pull of in another country unless you were part of some army or millitia...

People shouldn't be to rash to pass judgement on the states, but the states should take some self-critique in regards to their weapon-policy IMO.

Anyways, this was truly tragic. My feelings are with those who have suffered losses in this incident.

PS. have any of you seen the mobile footage that was taken at the scene. Some filmed and took pictures with their cellphones during it all. It's on this norwegian newspaper site right now...

Do you think that if the right to bear arms was removed that it would keep people with bad intentions from getting a weapon anyway? All it would do is make people who use a gun properly more vulnerable.
Anyway back on topic. I think it's really tragic that the world is the way it is these days. I mean they were all just kids. I think it's something other than a girlfriend cheating on him. The kid had some serious problems.

Earlier shooting dramas in american history(all translated from the norwegian news site, so bear with me on the poor translations):

2. october 2006:
A local milk-delivery-driver goes into the amish school at West Nickel Mines and shoots 10 girls at the age of 14 before killing himself. 5 of the girls die.

29. september 2006:
A 15 years old student kills his principle(spelling?) at his school in Wisconsin.

27. september 2006:
A traveler/vagrant(don't know how to translate prescise), takes six female students hostages, molests and kills them.

March 2005:
A 16 years old student shoots 5 students, a teacher, and a security guard at Red Lake High School borth in Montana before killing himself. Earlier he had killed his grandfather and his best-friend.

January 2002:
A student expelled from lawschool(or whatever it is called, Im translating from norwegian here...) kills a dekan(?), professor and a student.

April 1999:
Colombain incident. 12 students and a teacher killed by two fellow student before kiling themselves.

March 1998:

For all people, I live in the US!!! So to continue...ok isn't this strange? Hmmm all minors (or how do you call people under 18 ). I have lived in other countries, and let me tell you what! In a personal life aspect the US SUX!!! If you have no car and live in suburbs, there are not alot of ppl to hang around and you either play video game, smoke dope (like some people here), use drugs, and have sex while under even 16. So yeah mainly boredom makes all this, and nothing to do...I feel crazy here. O_O NOTHING TO DO ALL FRIENDS FAR AWAY and i can't drive...But in the oter country i lived we used to play football (soccer for americans :hmm: (why the hell do they named it soccer? oh well that is another topic)) Until you get a car and your friends are not near to walk to you litterally have no life, and only think of stupid stuff, a personal expirience: I had a BIG depression a couple of weeks ago, but in other country NEVER! Dunno is it society or something but something is wrong here...and about the population ask russia why don't they have things like this, or india, hmm about china i'm not sure... and i don't want to insult i tell the facts...and i pray to god for all inocent people that were involved.

they said that he was very well prepared, locked the doors with chains, he was wearing a jacket with lots of pockets, and he had clips all over his pockets along with two pistols, a 9mm and a .22 caliber which are very common. and he would fire 10-15 shots everytime and then unloaded his clip and droped it to the ground and loaded up a new one from his pocket and begin with the massacre again.

Here's the story.
South Korean 23 or 24 years old, can't remember.
Professors knew something was up but didn't do anything, and police officers had a chance to save some people because of the time but didn't do anything.
Why professors? When this guy had to sign something he put a question mark instead...
Why police? There was a call from the school at 7 am when one shot was fired. When did the police come? At 9 am...

What I felt really really sad for was the man who survived the Halocaust and saved his students by holding the door while they jump out the window. He survived something horrible, and dies in shooting!
Another guy saved his whole class, but quick thinking by pushing furniture into the door. The killer thought people were at the door and shot two bullets into the door. The killer reloaded and left, shooting blinding into the hallway.

Then, the ending...
He got out of a classroom he just murdered, and saw police coming his way. He went back in and shot himself.

...this is just...too much... I want to know why he killed those students...IMO, It's not on the girlfriend...witnesses says that he's a loner, always spends time alone...I bet, there's one reason...Read the one with the creative writing part...I think its depression...

I hate to sound all heroey and brave but only if the kids were rushing out TOWARD the shooter instead of away form him, he couldn't even kill 4 before he was swarmed. And I don't mean swarmed as in punched and kicked, i mean swarmed as in trampled by the legs of 500 students surging out of school.

Ok then, you be the first one to run towards him. -_-

I'm sorry but it's my civic duty to report you. I'm going to need your telephone number, residential address, address of school you attend, social security number, and any credit card information that you might have.
If you don't give me all that information then no one'll believe me.

He had a Glock - a 9mm pistol. That's easily survivable if he doesn't hit a vital area. So I have to agree with Attila, in a case like this, it probably would have been best for everyone to rush-dodge-and weave.

I don't think the students gave a shit what kind of gun he had at the moment, nor posses that kind of knowledge anyway.

Hey yeah that sounds easy. Cmon everyone *sounds of shooting screaming and general panic* lets all rush him. Just strafe a little bit as you go towards him, kinda like doom, and youll be fine. Dont worry if you get hit because its easily surviveable as long as you dont get hit in your vital organs. ok?

Have a decoy run around and let the guy waste bullets on him. When he runs out, RUSH.

Unless the students have been living under a rock their entire life I'm sure they know what a 9MM looks like considering, it is one of the most identifiable guns in the media these days.

Wow where do you live? Yea like students are going to focus on the gun to see if its a gun that can kill so ppl can rush the shooter. I mean c'mon. Do you really think most of these students can tell what kind of gun it is, given the circumstances? I could say, oh chances are slim to none.

What would everyone's first reaction be when someone gets shot? Well, Ill tell you. If you're just a regular student your reaction will probably be to hide. People are talking about the way people should hav reacted like they have been through military training.

Cereal&Milk you say the sutdents should have rushed-dodged and weaved. Sounds cool, but you have to take in consideration most of us will not rush a guy with a gun thinking they could dodge him and not get shot like in a movie or something. Rush-dodge and weave sounds like something in the movie, so I highly doubt students would have done that.

Obviously. But think about it - You're in a room, with 10 - 20 other students. A gunman lines you up on the wall and slowly aims at the most vital areas.

What do you do:

A: Stand there and get shot to death?
B: Rush the man and show a bleak chance of survival?

Also, It's a Glock. Single fire only. It's not as if he has an SMG, M4, or Steyr_Aug, where he can tear someone up just by adding pressure to the trigger. This guy would have to aim. In this case, it's not like a video-game. He won't kill anyone just by spraying (which is pretty damn true, because he shot a good lot of people, but only killed 32).

If someone had rushed, chances are he'd have run out of bullets before he gets the Asian knocked out of him.

^And, it's a suicide tactic. Given the circumstances, someone would have died regardless. One of them must have had a heroic bone in their body.

When you're under adrenaline you don't think...And man those are young guys and girls, and they hoped that someone will jump instead of him, no one wanted to risk for the other, they just hopped that the shooter would stop or not shoot if they listen to him...

talking about it afterwards is easy. its impossible to know exactly what happened in every detail and what the mood was at the time. if someone pointed a gun at you and told you to sand against a wall then you would. its all well and good coming up with useful suggestions now but then hindsight always has the best answers doesnt it? Those people are dead. Try not to sound so crass about it. They had friends and families and they are dead.

All well and good saying to rush him

But fear paraylses remember ..to some anyway and alot of those kids didnt see this coming or think in a way to think of rushing the gunman

I'm one of those people with a "foolish sense of heroism" if it ever came to the point where I was about to die, no exceptions, then fudge it. I'm going down with a fight. Knowing that there might be a chance of survival, I might as well.

Besides. It's no one's fault but the VaTech, and the Virginia police squad. It took them two hours to get out there. If they'd gotten out there sooner, the numbers would not be as high, and those two records wouldn't have been broken.

He had a GreenCard. He's a legal resident. Go to the newspaper editor and slap the crap out of him.

Also, people in his Play Writer class never messed with him. They always tried to be friendly with him, actually. They were scared he was going to crack and kill them all at any moment. XO

He never spoke with his roommates.
One of his roommates was also a disturbed being.

If I was there, I would pick up a table as defense and run straight into him.

Hopefully, the gun gets knocked out of his hand and I die a quick death.
