While searching for some decent single-player games to play, I stumbled upon "Frets On Fire." Has anyone here tried it before? From the screenshots it seems a bit like Guitar Hero with a keyboard, which is cool because it allows you to import songs from Guitar Hero 1 and 2 if you have the game disk.

Not if you don't want to. And it tells you how to import them on the website.

Im playing Frets on Fire on my computer right now O_o. Its a fun game if you dont have anything to do.

Also, you dont have to have the disk to import songs, you can just download them on their forum.

You can reset the controls you know. Just go to Settings, lol. Gonna mod it so it has different backgrounds and shitz (if that's possible, that is).

I know i can change the controls, but i just like using F1 F2 etc. The numbers just don't feel right. And yes, you can change the backround. My game lags so badly that i have to change the resolution to the lowest possible, change the graphics all the way down, and install a "noob edition" to get rid of the backround and all the unwanted stuff.

Yeah. Gotta hate the sweeping motions. There are a shit load of those in Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny. Maybe that's because they only made an "Amazing" mode, lol.

I've tried it. The songs where to hard for me. Sometimes it doesn't track the buttons you press for when you strum, but it was fun. I am better at GH though, but I don't have it. Just played it at a friend's house once. I rock the bass, yo! Just like IRL, bizoh! ^.^"

I'm going to go on the forums and see about the GH songs.

Frets on Fire is a GH clone that came out like 1-2 years ago or so. It has a pretty decent foloowing like most Bemani gamew with online counterparts.

I'd prefer to get GHEX, but it is literally impossible to now.

GHEX stands for Guitar Hero EXplorer, a program a guy made. He got pissed off on the forum so he took it off and has disappeared.

This game is fun, thanks for sharing it! I can handle easy mode...but medium.. I don't know. I can clearly see the licks and whatever coming, but my brain for some reason wants to push F2 and F4 when it's supposed to be F1 and F4...I keep pressing all the wrong buttons for like no reason and it's aggravating :(

Is holding the keyboard like a guitar encouraged? Like is it easier to play like that?

Also for those who hit the wrong keys when you know it's a different one, you'll get used to is eventually, same thing happens to me on ffr, it takes a while for your brain to be able to read the notes and for your fingers to hit the corresponding keys.

Fear of smashing the keyboard on a rampage?

That too. It's mainly putting too much pressure on the keyboard and breaking it in half, though. Though expensive, my keyboard is flimsy, so it would break easily, lol.

Yeah, after a little practice I can do it well now. But I'm still having huge issues with the parts of some songs where you have to hit a ton of the same notes over and over again...

Ah! I found out how...just gotta switch between the secondary and primary picks...there's a certain way to do it but I'm not sure I can explain so try it for yourself :p

Just like, alternate between the two really fast...like I have mine set to \ and backspace...so when parts like that come I go \B\B\B\B\B\B\B\B\B etc.

If I'm actually doing this wrong, I may sound stupid, but it works for me :P

And over 900 songs? Whoo! That's a doozy :O

Nah, I'm good. Got the songs from GH and GH2, lol. Also, if anyone's interested in releasing songs for FOF, then here's a tutorial (http://www.fretsonfire.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=3286).

And thanks for the tip, Kyou.

Also, anyone else use the Darkish mod? Best looking skin for the game I've seen yet (from the official fan forum, at least). =Q

I really don't know if it's allowed to discuss this but, here it goes, just let me know if it isn't.

Google Thepiratebay, which is a torrent base, and search FoF. There you have 4 packs if I'm not mistaken that contain the songs. Have fun.

By the way Cereal, could you provide me the directions to get the GH & GH2 songs ?

Woot, just started playing before todays exam, then came home played for a bit and I can get 90% on some mediums now, cept I always lose combo on parts where you hit 3 or 4 different frets fast like

o
o
o

or something. Seems like I'm picking before I hit the fret, so it doesn't register, so I have to delibirately fret like 0.2 sec before the note and then pick it on the note, hard to get used to >_>

Oh, I forgot to mention, after I had played for a little while last night, I caught myself shifting my toes (weird) to the notes and stuff while I was watching TV. The funny thing is, when I thought about it a little bit, I was still hitting them wrong XD

EDIT: Ah, how rude of me! Thanks Astro :D

Dam, I notced I miss a lot for no reason at all, and then I looked at the keys on the bottom, and they weren't pushed down when I'm holding the corresponding frets. Is it something wrong with my computer and not being able to register to many F keys being pressed at the same time or something?

You have to hold down the pick key as well as press the buttons. Since you're using the default keys, you have to press [ENTER] or [R. SHIFT] as you press the Frets.

Astro

Actually it works like this:

You press the fret/s you want and then for it to register you need to press pick. It's just like placing your fingers in the strings(frets) and play(pick).

Are you kidding? I do just fine this way, lol. It's easier for me to time it if I press both buttons at the same time. There is a trick for streams that connect to each other though, if some of you didn't notice. If you can run a string to the end, you don't need to press the pick button. This means that if you can do it perfectly from line to line, you don't have to use the pick, and you can just focus on timing the frets.

I have the F1-5 setup...I tried Expert (or advanced or whatever, I can't remember at the moment), but I can't reach the pink one just right. How do you guys have it set up?

Edit: I mean, I can hit the pink one, but I have to move my hand in order to do it, and it throws me off for a bunch of the thingies until I can get back on track.

shade45
06-19-2007, 03:55 AM
I pretty much just move my hand, but try not to move it too much, and pay attention to getting it back to the right position to play the other notes. In time, I'll be able to switch without thinking about it.

K I got 1 problem now. It seems to only be happening on Defy The Machine (the one that came with FoF). Whenever I press down the f1 and f3 at the same time, or f2 and f4, it doesn't work! Like it doesn't show them as pressed. It works with f4 and f5, but when if its f1 nad f3, or f2 and f4, it doesn't register as being pressed down. I don't think I noticed this happen on any other song, hope not.

Anyways I can now do parts with the many frets pressed back and forth =D And I pretty much press the pick and fret at the same time now (which is what I thought I was doing before, but it was never registering)

Astro

If you practice, it will end up coming naturally... Except that if you press F3 and F5 at the same time, my keyboard wont let me pick it.. So for medium amazing I'll have to switch frets positioning T_T

Important: there is a setting called "tapable notes", change this to "yes". It means you do not need to strum on some notes, and you only need to press the fret button.

Seriously, this makes it so much easier.
