Hello, I am a come to be future Game Programmer. I have a dream to one day create the best MMORPG on the Internet. Before I can create it though, I need some ideas, please help me. As you can see from my name, avatar, and signature, I'm somewhat of a Digimon Fan. I hope to create a game that is based on Digimon, or Digmon-like. Thank you in advance for any future help you will give me.:)

Well, if you wanna get started on Game Programming, go to the sticky at the top of the forum, "Getting Started with C++". That should get you started out on a proramming lanaguage, which will (eventually) let you make your very own game.

Well see the thing is, you can make deals with the company of a game you want to create (For Example: Let's say you want to make a Naruto Online Game, but you don't work for the company that owns Naruto. You can make a deal with them so you can make an Online game with their idea). Either one of two things can happen. 1. They will like your idea and pay you for the idea and make the game themselves, 2. They will pay for the team, hardware, software and you will make it, but you must give them part of the profit if it is a profitable game.

They don't have to pay you for the idea, they can take it free of charge. They can also say get lost and neither use the idea not let you use it. Also making a game isn't easy, which you will soon find out. Start out slow and work your way up. I've been programming for around 6 years and have never made a mmo. I've attempted to, but it requires a lot of time and dedication and lots of sleepness nights.

Make simple games first, like pong, tetris, or your own SIMPLE idea. First game I created was my own idea cause I didn't want to reinvent the wheel if you know what I mean. It was just a simple game where you walk around, collect coins and avoid the badguy.

After you complete that, move up to doing simple network things. Like a chat system, so you can learn how networking is done. Add muliplayer to the game you just made.

After that, make a simple mmorpg. Keyword there, simple. Don't plan on it getting popular, don't hire any graphics artists. You use own graphics, even though they will most likely suck ^_^. This will give you a feel of the development process of a mmorpg, and the problems you going to have to overcome during that process.

There are lots of things your going to need to learn that I don't think any or many tutorials on the internet cover. Things like making your network code hackproof. Also grabbing tutorials from random sites and incorporating the ideas into a mmorpg DOESN'T work. Trust me I tried it a long time ago. I read a tutorial on programming a SQL database, worked awesome. Untill I realized a major flaw, the tutorial didn't teach me to parse user input, and the database was easily hacked by SQL injection.

There, after that long post, there are really 2 ways to become a good video game programmer.

1. The quickest way, go to college and learn it there. They get straight to the point on the concepts of programming video games.

2. Learn from internet, and personal experince. This is a really slow method, trust me it could takes years before you learn how to program a mmo. Tutorials you find on internet arn't going to teach you everything you need to know, or like my SQL example, teach you how to incorporate what you just learned into a specific project such as a mmo.

Anyways decide online done downloading. Hope this helps ^_^.

Digidestined I don't want to be negative or anything but the chances that the creators of digimon actually let u go on with your project r very small. Anyways for ideas...
1. Make weekly or monthly tournaments in various "towns" or "cities" (if your planning to incorporate towns etc.)
2.If possible don't make it turn based. Do that the player controls the digimon and moves around and does attacks according to the button which has been pressed.
Well hope this helps!

Suggestions for a MMORPG?

Dont go and do something fantasy based or FPS based. In my opinion the market is currently flooded with poor to fairly average attempts at each of these genres.

The suggestion not to make it turn based was also a good one. Turn based games are very difficult to do well ( good ones to look at are Master Of Orion 2, Civilization, Colonization) but even harder to do well multiplayer unless there are turn time limits imposed and a brilliant AI auto management system.

Also you may want to go back and look at digimon and figure out WHY you like it.

Then compile a list of the reasons why, and build a new idea that features these in it. Then you'll be on your way to your MMORPG.
