I recently started mudding again because of the gritty “Tales of the Malazan Empire” fantasy book series, which reminded me the adrenaline rush I used to get from playing pkilling MUDs. So which MUD did I go back to? Would you believe an old “text” based MUD called Duris: Land of Bloodlust? The problem with graphical MUDs (or MMORPG) for pkilling is that it’s a lot easier in an MMORPG than in a text based MUD. For example:
While seeing characters (yours and the enemy) from an "overhead" view, it's easier to click and shoot with a mouse on a character on a screen than using multiple commands during a text based fight. E.g. bash, kick, stand when bashed, flee, etc.
The ability to run and hide or to surprise someone is easier in a text based MUD than a graphical based MUD. It's more dramatic. The fight could be over before you know what happened. You might have to scroll back up the screen after you die to see what happened to you.
Lastly, too many MMORPGs have a lot of players who sell great EQ or characters for real $$ which ruins the integrity of the game. It removes the "pain" of losing your great EQ since you can simply buy it back or buy several sets of EQ in advance with real money.
I can understand that when people pay to play a MMORG or MUD that they don’t want to lose their nice EQ, but since Duris is free and you can get nice EQ by killing someone, I don’t think losing EQ is such a big deal on such a MUD.
I am Shizen, a Troll warrior on Duris. Look me up if you decide to try Duris out :) www.durismud.com (http://www.durismud.com/)
