Just found it today, not sure what the gold in the game is for...but I suspect it's just their way of scoring your account against the rest of the players for ranking.

I wouldn't say that, been trying to play Duels, and it won't let me equip my armour or new sword to fight with...so I am stuck with the default knife and my armour.

You need to press save after you equip your item.
