I just turned 15 so my mom is finally letting me subscribe to a MMO. I've done some research over various MMORPGs and Final Fantasy XI looks amazing! I'd really love to play on some servers as others possibly from this community as I enjoy most of the people here. So my question is, who plays Final Fantasy XI? Perhaps you'd be willing to let me tag along? I'd really enjoy that.

World of Warcraft isn't that much of a challenge to me though. My brother plays and has a level 70 gnome mage and 50 something human rouge. I created a draenei shaman and managed to reach level 20 in only a couple of hours of play. Not in all one sitting of course.

Final Fantasy XI seems very challenging but also very rewarding for those who manage to grind to the top and play hours and hours looking for a certain item. That's fun to me.

Obviously you're oblivious to a decent storyline, end game value and a united community, that can be the only reason you're placing an over commercialized game with little to no replay or end game values on a pedestal. On Topic: FFXI is a good starter MMO, the community may be small but it's quite helpful and they recently cracked down on hackers.
If you want more suggestions I think you should look into Ragnarok Online (complete addiction) and/or Guild Wars, just to smooth you into the MMORPG scene. Although, I do give you fair warning, you will encounter asshats with no better to do but ruin your gaming experience.

@1337, Glad to be of assistance ^^, but as fun as maple can be the grind and quests can be seriously exaggerated, but I think what you should do is try maple first, then take the 15 day free trial from RO, and if none of those satisfy you or if you haven't already, then you should just get a monthly subscription to FFXI, I have several friends who have had their best experiences there and I'm pretty sure OnRPG has a solid player base there on Odin server.

Anyways, I always loved the FF series so I'd say FFXI is good choice. And after seeing what people on WoW do, I think tis best you stay away from it. Lineage 2 is probably my personal favorite due to Valakas :3

World of Warcraft is nice and all, but trust me, the community is such an ***. FFXI has one of the most close-knit communities ever, since the subscription fee and steepleveling curve weeds out most of the immature people wanting to "zomg be 1337". Ragnarok is pretty good too, since it has a lot of great features such as guild wars, PvP and boss hunting and stuff. Theres a decent community in there too. Guild Wars is nice, but it may not be your type of game. You get to level 20 fairly quickly, but most of the game takes place in Arenas, or in Guild battles. It is a game based on PvP, where skill is more important than your equipment or level. It requires dedication too, but theres much less grinding.

Since you are going to Try Maple and Ragnarok, you could also try WYD Global too! XD

For a hard core gamer between the the 3 I would choose Ragnarok then Maple then WYD Global but if you have little time on games or not much of a hardcore gamer it would be WYD Global, Ragnarok then Maple Story. But what I am all saying, you can just try them before settling to FFXI XD

FFXI i think is a great game to start in the mmo genre but if you do play it you need to puts some time into the game. I personaly dont play FFXI but my brother dose and he plays the game almost every day.

also try CoV/CoH its a great game with a great community. the chariter customization is one of the best ive seen. you can make your char look like almost any hero/villian or make you can make you own.

final fantasy XI does look amazing but its more about the gameplay u should be looking for, the gameplay is... i guess u could say it is slower then other games in terms of fighting and such, although i avhe never palyed the game my friend plays it and while i too was researching about it i found out about the battle system and i guess it didnt really fit me too much :(

my first mmo was Helbreath and it kinda drew me into the more major games,but i've heard from a few people that if you never played an mmo before FFXI might be kinda hard,but more power to you dude if you can hang in there you might like it.

with one shot I would go with WAR too. It is a good one to get your feet wet.

Having played this game since the NA Beta, I've seen the lower-level progression... especially around Valkurm/Qufim, take a huge hit.

Nowadays, there are very few parties forming at those levels.
On multiple servers, when I tried to make a new character, I would find myself soloing while looking for a party for 4-5 hours at a time around levels 10-25.

The best advice I can give is that, if you begin playing, is to roll on the most populated server possible.

Even then, you might find yourself lost/confused.
FFXI, though it's a really good game, is severely outdated.
After getting used to WoW's UI, it can be difficult to adjust very well, for some people.

And, you may get extremely frustrated and give up on the game very quickly, when you're not able to find a party for hours on end, die severel times while soloing, level down, etc.

As for WAR... I would hold out on that.
Despite all the hype, it looks to be going the way of LOTRO, because it's missing one crucial element.

FFXI is a great MMO if you have the patience and friends. Without them you'll never enjoy it as much.

RMT still a problem, but its not as effective as before.
Botting is only a big problem at the Zilart HNM/King camps, but thats just a scratch of endgame, theres still the ToAU HNM, Einherjar, Salvage, Assault.
LOLDRG!? That term is very outdated, DRGs are pretty damn good now that the 2hand update was made.

I can't really think much more other than constant blabbing, but the moral of all this is make friends as soon as possible if you want to play this game.

i played ff xI for a few months a while back, I think its one of the better mmos out there but it gets far too repetitive much like L2 so all i have to say is... HELLGATE!!!

WAR is not a strategy game,or at least not completly...while there r a certain RTS factor,its pretty much a hardcore PvP MMORPG.

think about it like a WoW with improved graphs,far more complex system,full endgame content,and the PvP of the creators of DAoC (*drools)

all what WoW wanted to be,but failed halfway...

I know Arc, that's exactly why I'll be picking it up. I've heard so many wonderful things about Dark Age of Camelot and I really enjoy the Warhammer universe, and of course, MMOs are my new thing. ^^

FFXI is a great game with a nice community The only things ididnt like was having to use menus for everything like in ps1 versions and charge times im use to quick bar instant shots or 1 sec cast times and having skills at like every 2-5 lvls insted of a skill every like 10-20 lvls lol. Also You cant really solo You can for a bit in some places but then pulls on you ur dead its party or die and for lower lvls its har dto find other low lvls so you should really join with friends or have a friend alrdy playing higher lvl.

Dude if you play FFXI get ready to wait hours to get in party. But sometimes it only takes minutes to get one. I saw Jeuno on my old server and it was so empty I was like wtf. But you can solo now also if you sub BST. But solo'ing is boring :D

FFXI battle is special cause you have to use like different types of skills chained together from different people to make skillchains and magic bursts to do more DMG.

Anyway good luck! I loved FFXI the whole way it brought me. Oh yeah lol BRD/WHM ftw. Or DRG/SAM. Or THF/NIN xD

guys, this really comes down to what he wants in an mmo
my active mmo's in the last few years were FF11, CoH/CoV, WoW,L2, GW

the top 2 i would recomend would be FF11 and WoW depending on WHAT you are looking for.
WoW is not for evry one and neither is FF11

FF11 is more of a slow paced mmorpg, wich requires quite a bit of thinking and strategy while playing, just grinding mobs requires you to know your skillchains and such.
The game is almost purely PVE based, small tight comunity, evry one is usualy really nice, its easy to find a good LS and most players are willing to help with almost anything. Lots of jobs, and you can be all jobs on one char, and dual job, wich i think is sick.
the downfall of the game is lack of good pvp(barely existant), need to farm alot, forced to grind, the economy is always going apeshit due to gil sellers comming then a mass ban of gil sellers/buyers, and also, requires alot, ALOT of time, more then any other mmo i have ever played. just getting a group takes a while, specialy due to the small comunity, then need to get set up, then your set for grinding for many hours. finding a good LS can make this alot easyer.
btw LS stands for linkshell wich is pretty much the guilds for ff11, xep you can have more then one, but can only have one ACTIVE at a time.

WoW is massive fast, pvp based mmorpg. huge comunity, due to that, there are tons of imature ****s, they can be avoided by acting mature and playing well to get yourself in a good, serious guild. i have to disagree saying that WoW has nearly no endgame content, the game is pretty much all end game content, its pretty much the only reason to play the game, the endgame raids and shit are pretty crazy, PVP arena is also extremly fun. flying mounts are a big plus. The downfall of this game is its extremely huge popularity, bringing along lots of idiots, 12 year old kids, and such. but dont let that turn you off, honestly, its easy to get into a good guild that wont allow people like them, and only these kinds of guilds get anywere in the game. another downpoint is that the pve is extremly boring, and questing before lvl 58 is somewhat gay, it makes lvling seem smoother but, simply grinding is alot easyer and faster. 58+ questing in the outlands is really worthwhile though.


in the end it comes down to if you either want:

a more strategy, pve based mmo with actual storyline and such.
or a fast paced pvp mmo.

another thing i forgot to mention, if you cant be playing on for hours on end, wow is most likely your best option. since it does not require you to play for hours on end to get decent gear, and if you can find a 3 hour straigt free atleast once during the week, you can get raiding gear pretty fast.

chose wich ever suits you best, and have fun.

I play FFXI and I do not recommend you to play this game for a starter.

This game is team based.. everything you do.. lvling.. missions.. quest... you will need people to do so.
Unlike other games.. you cant even solo your way to top.. (except for few 1 or 2 jobs.. at the end you still need people to uncap certain lvls). You will need to party with 2-6 people to lvl.. missions... quest always.. mostly 6. Game money can be pain too.

Unless you have friends to support and play with you.. you will need patient... I mean a lot of patients.

There are many good things I can tell you about this game.. I mean a lot.. this game is anti-hack or anti-lvl-bot.. you dont see people botting their *** up to lvl. No dupes.. No magically appearing of items.. GM will be always be there..(but quiet useless) SE(ffxi provider) will continue to ban RMT and few hacks out there(which is minor.. *Claiming Boss monster* bots). Missions.. Quest... a lots of storyline.. You will never finish what this game can provide for you.

If you have patient.. and if its alright for you to wait for party invite.. If its alright for you to be poor.. then play.
