I think it's when your computer cleans up your hard drive by making all neat and orderly (I think).

I think the computer destroys your hard drive (remove everything).

LOL

Also, it orders the files on your HD to allow for quicker access. I also think it deletes unnecessary files.

By unnecessary I mean old cache files, empty folder, etc. Your files will be fine.

Defrag your harddrive daily (around once a week). If you don't for a while it takes forever to defrag it.

Overnight, leave your comp on and in the morning you may be done.

defragging a pc depends on your system i.e. the size of your harddisk (or defragmenting partition, if you have any) and the rest of your system, being cpu and ram (those measure how fast they process all the files and order them again).

defragmentating is usefull when you constantly delete and install files, continuously doing so causes your harddrive to place a whole variety of files on a random, diffirent location eventually causing a slowdown in loading up those files when used because your HD needs to look for them first.
Defragging will orden up those file (if they can be ordened, windows files cannot be moved) so your HD speeds up again.

in games, this can cause stuttering (eventhough this is only a slight proportion compared to a lack of memory).
having a totally distorted hard drive can also cause crashes in games.

It's like this, when data is put on your hard drive, it's put in what ever place it can fit it, often breaking a single file into many parts around the drive. So when it wants to open that file, it needs to go around and collects all those parts. Defragging will put all those little parts into the same location, making the drive access a lot faster.

Use that. It's a lot better than the Microsoft one that comes with your computer.

Try computer mechanic 7, there's the defrag option. It's really good, no kidding (You can download the free-trial on download.com ) It has tons of other features too...analysis, registery cleaning, anti-spyware, anti-virus, etc.

Daily once a week?

Anywho. Defraging keeps your computer nice and fast. Also try Disc CleanUp.

Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools.

Do give it a night or so to run. (Depending on your HD space.) I've used about 60gb on my internal HD and it still takes about an hour.

You probably ran the screensaver version.

You have to just run the one called "JkDefrag"

There's no drop-down menu's or anything either. Just double click it and it does all the work.

Oh, one more thing. You're probably wondering about all the colors you see on your screen.

* Black = empty
* Dark-green =in use by unknown data
* Light-Green = regular files
* Green = spacehogs
* Yellow = fragmented
* Red = unmovable
* Pink = system files
* White = busy

In the end it should look something like this:

that's actually funny.
That almost like presuming that microsoft inserted a self destruct program into their operating system.

then again, going from their previous market stunts, i wouldn't be surprised if they did. After all, if defragging did destroy your pc, you'd have to buy a new pc from the under-table-companions of microsoft ...

And when it stops, you'll get a pop up with the results saying what files couldn't be defragged and soforth. when you get that pop up, you can close it down
When you happen to close the program down while it's busy defragging, i'm pretty sure it doesn't undo the progress
