You need a guild to create guild fort, have guild battles, and most important. To be able to join big parties of 3+ members. GUild battles is where you can get TOB (tears of blacksmith) The only person that can make guild fort is guild master. Guild Master controls everything inside the guild. But all this that i told you is related to RYL2. keep that in mind.

Yea you can only have 10 ppl in a guild. And im not sure about the TOB stuff. I never done it. And yea, a lot of guilds are like that with offline ppl all the time.

As far as I know, guild forts can't be built yet, maybe it'll be implemented in the upcoming patch - july, from what i've heard. I saw once an announcement about the guild war starting while I was playing, and it was starting right after the race war, but I haven't joined it then and never saw it since. I know that there is a guild, "Fort Test". It's a GM guild, and I know they were testing stuff, with the guild war and the forts.
I don't know anything about the ToB winnable in guild wars, how is that supposed to work?
Oh, and to further answer your question: there are some advantages about being a guild member, at least that you can get answers from the older players in the guild - which are more inclined to help co-members, and also you can get help partying from other guild members. I mean, if you are playing a warrior, for example: warriors have a hard time finding leveling parties after lvl 60 or so, but you can get someone in your guild to "anchor" you, especially if it's a support caster of approximately the same level as you are.
Basically, the other guild members are something of a group of friends, usually. Of course, that may not necessarily apply if you join a random guild.
Oh, and there are some disadvantages too. For one, when they will finish implementing the guild wars, there will be clan rivalries, meaning that clans assume either the friend, neutral or enemy status towards other clans, so you might find yourself walking along in the Fungus Forest, just making a quest or buying stuff at the General Merchant, and get instantly killed by a member of an enemy clan. In other words, members of enemy clans can kill each other without warning at any moment, no duel invitation is required.
On the other hand, if you are not a member of a clan, certain actions are not performed on other players, guild members themselves. A healer, for example, cannot heal a player which has a guild unless he himself is a member of any guild, and that is just an example. Support casters feel this "need for guild" mostly, to be able to... well, support the other party members.
Hope that answers it all:D
