So I just got it, um, I'm new to steam, and I just installed it, so, how do I get the games? Do I really have to download it off steam, or are they on the cds?

It would be really silly if you got CDs with the box and still had to download the games.

I do, it turns out...
You shouldn't have to download if you have the CDs, at least not the entire game(s).
You install the games from the CDs, and then once your account is up and running on Steam, and you add the keys etc, Steam should only download the needed updates to the game(s) you have installed. If you installed say just Team Fortress 2 from the CDs, then Steam would download just the needed updates to TF2, including the latest patch (which was quite a big one for the game) etc.
If you did NOT install the games from the CDs, then yes you would download the entire thing off Steam itself.

You can do either. I had to download the games because I don't have a DVD drive.

Yeah, I just figured out, you have to re-install it once steam is installed, for some reason. I got all the games on it, and now insurgency as well. But for some reason only HL2 will work, all the mods freeze before the menu pops up.. :(
Jacksterson - you need to have the Source SDK Base installed and also you must have run it or a HL2 based game at least once if I'm not mistaken also (to place needed files etc)
So go to your Steam, find the Source SDK Base, install it and run it once and then you can play any HL2 mod you want :)
