Please make this thread a sticky, for obvious reasons. :D
The information contained in the official RYL2 webpage on the subject is incomplete, and I do not recommend players to follow it - I must say I haven't entered the forums because my browser doesn't support them  . Here is all I've learned about crafting items over five months of playing, time in which I've spent insane amounts of gold and materials in fruitless attempts, thanks to the noble co-players which either refuse to help new players with information, charge prices for it or simply put them on false leads. I am still unsure about some pieces of information, which I will mark with a star (*) sign. I will post further information as I will get it.
The information itself will be written in black, while my comments, explanations and examples will be written in blue. Also, all information here has been collected with human characters, which may explain the examples using just human equipment as well as some possible minor flaws.
Please read everything before trying to apply this information, and be careful not to overlook anything, it may save you time, money, and some precious items.
Combining
Available after CharLvl 20 at the local Blacksmith
Items required: base item, sacrificed item and gold
Allows the combination of one base item with another one, which must be of the same class as the base item or better. This means that you cannot combine a C class item (base item) with a D class one, but the reverse is possible.
Combining allows you to take ONE stat from the combined item and add half the difference, rounded up, to the base item's stat. For example, if your base sword has a min dmg of 17 and a max dmg of 20, and the sacrificed item has a min dmg of 18 and a max dmg of 25, you can choose to add to your base item either 1 min dmg or 3 max dmg
Each item in the game (except gloves and boots for human, and pants for akhan) has a certain range of stats for each grade. For example, a buckler may be D grade for a defence range up to 5, C grade up to 7 and B grade up to 9 - this is not a fact, the values are given just to illustrate the example. There should be a table somewhere with all the items and their stats per grade, but I haven't found it yet. So it is possible to combine your item to obtain the highest one stat for its grade, then combine it again with another higher grade item with higher stat and thus improve your base item's grade. Following the above example, if your D buckler has 4 def, you can combine it with another D buckler with 5 def, taking the (5-4)/2 , rounded up = 1 def and obtaining your base D buckler with 5 def. Then, when combining again with a C 7 def buckler, your original item will get 6 def, thus improving its grade to C.
This is what I usually do to get reasonably good items - meaning the bes non-A items around:D : I crash onto the black market, gambling my inventory full of C grades, saving any occasional B I get, carefully observing at the same time what are the upper limits for each stat. Then I pick the base item, hit the blacksmith and start combining all the Cs, trying to max out all the stats before improving the base item's grade. After that, I combine again with the Bs I got so far, making my item B itself, then crash on the Black Market again, this time saving only the B items, and I repeat the procedure until I own the best B grade item I could possibly make.
WARNING: The above tactic is not worth applying with low level characters, which level up quite fast, thus changing equipment often. Also, it requires huge amounts of gold for gambling, especially armors which get in the 500k apiece range for the last 3 items.
*I have never tried it, but I think there is the possibility to downgrade your item using Combine, by simply choosing a stat that is lower than your base item's (they appear in red in the Combine window, while the upgrades appear in green). Although I don't know yet what good could come out of this, I will try to test this aspect and post the results later on.
Enhancing
Available after CharLvl 40 at the Blacksmith
Items required: base item, 10x Metals (Spens, Sr. Mitchell Metals, Yiterni Stones or Tear of Blacksmith), gold
Adds enchantments to the base item. Unlike the Combining process, which has a 100% chance for success, the Enhancing has a fixed percentage for failure, depending on the metals used.
*I am not sure about this, but i think that the chances are: 50% for spen, 60% for mit, 70% for yit.
The Tear of Blacksmith (TOB) always yields 100% success, but it cannot be used more than twice in a row. It is also not droppable, so unless you are in the position to spend resource points for it - what are resource points and how to get them can form the subject for another topic - you have to buy them at insane prices - about 2.000.000 apiece, and remember that you need 10 for one enchantment.
I must say I have not experimented very much with Enhancing, but this is what I have gathered so far.
Forum user Cheeming has presented a table of the indicated metals to use for enhancing in the "B and A class" thread, which I will also present below:
1-5 enchantments - Spens
6-7 enchantments - Sr. Mitchell Metal
8 (possibly 9) enchantments - Yiterni Stone
9-10 enchantments - Tear of Blacksmith
I have also obtained the 6th enchantment using spens, but the chance gets too low to rely on it. I also tried getting from 6 to 7 using spens, and as a result I spent 150 spens getting my item from the original 6 enchantments down to 3, so it would be VERY advisable to use the specified materials.:D
The maximum number of enchantments on any item is 10. Beginning from 6 on, each additional enchantment brings one slot in the item, givint the player the possibility to insert gems, further raising the item stats.
Now this is the part I haven't yet tested, but I have multiple statements to support it, so I expect to be working as stated. Once you start ehancing your item, you cannot preform further combines on it until you reach 10 enchantments, so it would be advisable not to begin Enhancing until you are sure you won't need to upgrade anything else on it for the time being. Supposing you have already maxed out one stat, the first gem inserted with the same stat bonus should turn the item one grade higher, and you should still be able to insert the other gems. Then, you should upgrade another item to the same level, but maxing a different stat - for example, assuming you have maxed out the max dmg on your sword, then put 5 gems in it further raising your max dmg, then max the min dmg on another sword of the same type, socket it with 5 gems further raising your ming dmg. THEN, when you Combine the two swords, which now should be possible, the item grade remains the same, the stats remain the same, the enchantment level is again 0 and you got the gems back in your inventory, so you can start all over again, further obtaining better and better items.
Best item grade is AAA+++, and I suppose there is a cap on the max value of the items' stats, but that, again, I haven't found out.
Other things: B grade helms cannot be gambled. I've spent about 50 mils on that too, before I found out. Also, helms cannot be Combined, and again, I've never tried, but I suppose they cannot be Enhanced either. Both these things were possible in the previous patches, but they were removed in the current one. I really hope that will change in the new patch. :D
If I find out anything else, I will post here. Until then, any questions, suggestions, comments, are welcome.
