Welp, there is a game mod for HL2 or CSS, I forget, anyways, it had spaceship fights. It was all, you are in a mother ship, they are in a mother ship. You have to take control of their main ship. Your and their ship has things like turrets on them and all of that good stuck to keep you away. Inside holds a nice area for battles. Of course to get to the enemy ship you would take a fighter or carrier into space, find their ship, and go in it. OR attacking their miner spots and stuff think that gives you more points.
Anyways, the game is called Eternal Silence
It is a more new mod, still not actually "done".
Ok so I found the req:
"Note: To play Eternal Silence, you must own Half-Life 2 and have the Source SDK Base installed. (Having Half-Life 2 installed is NOT a requirement.)"
I think that means, if you just have SDK Base you can play? Dunno...

It's a bit dated, has a VERY large learning curve and the community is pretty small, but it's all I know of.

Space cowboys died a while ago, servers shut down.
Flysis was born, its almost a direct copy of space cowboys, its just got a different tutorial.
