Sadly enough, you are lucky it is still working a year later. My dad had that set too, and the scroll button broke. As did the right click. And, the mouse wouldn't register sometimes.
It was a piece of shit, considering what he paid for it.
I ended up getting him a USB mouse for his birthday. I dunno if its fixable, but...I'd just get a new mouse >_<

With mouse and anything that comes in contact with your skin, you will flake off skin. More than likely you have skin gumming up your "eyes" (sensors) and switch. Open up the housing and cleaning the gunk out.
You could also have static build-up. A simple way to solve this is to remove the batteries (if its wireless) or disconnect the mouse and discharge the static. To discharge just hold each button down for 5 to 10 seconds one at a time. This will discharge any static in the peripheril.
You can use this discharge method on keyboards, mouse, mobile phones, or any wireless device. This includes remotes and console controllers. In the end, it could save you that extra $15 to $70 dollars that you would spend on a new device.
Just remember to disconnect the device from the power source before attempting to discharge the static.

That would be a good idea...lol. But, if it is the same mouse I had the problem with...its not that. The wheel looses its friction, and just spins (you can feel a distinct difference). There is NO resistance, it just spins.

I use a Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0. Its a 5 button mouse (2 thumbs, left click, right click, wheel button). I purchased it when they were first released. Best damn mouse I have ever used.
