Whether you have a religion or not, I think this stuff is pretty interesting and I hope you do too, if not then why are you still in this thread? :P
But anyways I was just wondering about how these commandments aren't being obeyed as they used to in the past, and just wondering about some of them. I mean for an example would be gluttony, I mean look at how many people are overweight in this world, especially in the US. I mean if people tried a little to lose some weight every day, I'm sure there wouldn't be that many people struggling to lose weight like they are when they may almost die of a heart attack.
Another thing would be how you're suppose to treat your neighbor as your brother, or something like that... (Sorry I'm not even familiar with them that well). But now adays people can't trust ANYONE, with sex offenders, muggers, gangsters. I remember back in the day when I used to live in a small neighborhood my neighbors would say hi and introduce themselves and we'd have conversations, get togethers, etc. Now adays you don't want to say hi to you're neighbor because you're too scared they might be crazy, or you might not care, or whatever the reason you just don't.
Sometimes I think whenever a certain book/bible says how one day will come where this world is going to be destroyed and all this stuff about the anti christ, I always think the anti christ is us, not as like those group of goth kids over there who sing death metal songs, but all of us as a whole and one day were just gonna bring ourselves to our own doom as the world keeps populating itself, and we probably could change that if we all tried, but I'm sure as the world keeps growing that its just gonna get worse and worse with more people having different opinions and us arguing and fighting that were gonna destroy such a beautiful gift we've been given as humans to whatever had created us or to how this amazing place we used to live in was made.
I tried to make this a discussion as best as I could, I really want to hear what everyone has to think about this, but before this topic gets locked after the first page, please bear in mind that while the person who posted above you (including me) may be a bit slow, but that is no reason to treat him like hes your enemy.. And please lets try and post some well thought out posts, whether your opinion is against this or with this I'd like to hear it either way. :)

The Ten Commandments aren't being followed as much any more because of the simple fact that man can, and is corrupt. Just because God sets rules for us doesn't mean we will follow them, He's just giving them to us because He knows that we're screwed up the *** and need guidelines to help us go through our daily lives without us slaughtering and raping eachother for trivial things. Look at Sodom and Gomorrah for instance: No one followed any guide lines (except for a few people there), and because of that alone everyone was raping, murdering, and stealing from one-another for person gain. It's really sick. :<

well, i dont think everyone was super friendly and neighbourly in the "olden" days. i reckon things were just as bad back then, instead of mugging you for your phone people probably mugged you for your pack mule.
there still are millions of practicing christians, as well as muslims and jews who still adhere to their specific guidlines. i guess its because 1000 years ago almost everyone was religious with a large proportion being religious in the most basic way; ie by name or whatever and not by going to church etc. today though those people who 1000 years ago would be religious by name are now atheist or just dont care.
you have to remember that back in the (much like in many third world countries, also the middle east is a good example) churches, mosques, general religious gathering places were a good source of news. you could meet up there before market to organise trades, you could hear whats going on in the next village and in the 'empire' at large. it was a place to see friends and neighbours as well as practice your religion. it was a focal point of any community.
but nowadays we communicate in different ways. modern society in general has made us more reclusive.
we no longer have to go to individual traders to get our meat, vegetables, bread etc, its bought from a faceless outlet
we no longer have to visit the local physician or pharmacist with our everyday ailments, we go to huge hopspitals or buy our drugs from any random store.
we no longer have to go to the town meeting, or gathering at the town square to hear the news.... we can switch on, log on, or dial up.
if something breaks we dont need to find the local handy-man or visit the carpenters. we post it off, or throw it away and order a new one.
everything today is more faceless, i think the decline of local communities is one factor which contributed to the growing lack of church attendance. suburban decay i think it was called.it was written about alot in the 1930's in britain, the "devils decade".
the same excuses always come through, i dont have time, im too busy, its not important.... so i guess people have filled their lives with substitutes for religion and so many people feel they no longer need it. i dunno, thats what i see. i dont know about the end of the world though, biblical or otherwise.

That just really makes me sad. :x

Well i expect a flame soon so....
Morals don't mean shit to a lot of people, people that care about money and material stuff and it doesn't matter if the guy next to them gets hurt in the process, all they want is profit.

Yeah...what you said doesn't make any sense at all.
Money and Material stuff? Everyone in the world cares about money and material stuff... If a person didn't...he/she would be dead. What would they eat? Rocks and grass for 80 years? Live in a frken box for their whole life?
How can you not care about material stuff...
In the modern world, money IS everything. And THAT IS the reason why it is impossible to follow the ten commandments.
Unless you lived in a world with no currency and everyone lived in the exact same houses, and everything was equally balanced throughout every single human on earth...it's impossible.
Why? Because humans have something called jealousy and selfish-ness. Its something that EVERYONE has...if one person has a bigger house than you do, you'd be jealous. Which would eventually lead to corruption among mankind (what we have now). It's too late now anyways.
We've learned to adapt to this kind of world, where money is crucial...and that is the reason why very few people even think about the Ten Commandments.

The Bible and all the related jazz is just Old World.
Old does not work with New. Besides, hardcore creationists,Christians, Scientolgists have to be seriously lacking in the IQ to believe such bull.
Humans have to ability to be informed about anything from any view point now, compared to the Old were it was feed to you
through a book in a Church.

Yes, because the undeniable corroborative evidence that supports Christianity clearly must be ignored for someone to hold faith within the doctrine. You got us! What are we going to do now?!:look:
Tell me, what do you believe, and what makes you personally so much more informed about it? I can promise you that I know more about my beliefs than you know about yours, so if I were you I'd reconsider declaring all religious people sheep. That's simply a stupid statement to make. Sure, I may be wrong, but it's not because I'm uninformed.

This is the perfect answer to the question "why does God allow such pain?" The state of our planet is the product of our own decisions, nothing more of less.

Your thesis is unfounded, money is not everything.
Its a matter of choice, even for those who lack the personal requirements to think about it could be, as the options are open for them any time.

I don't know if god exists or not, couldn't care any less.
I cannot prove either way, so I don't see the need to place myself on either side of the fence and be athiest or religious.
I make my own morals and live my own way, you never know what'll come tomorrow and I don't wanna spend my time worrying about shit I'll never know for sure.

People in the past didn't obey the commandments any better. Look at all those wars and shit that has happened.
The world, people and everything was always imperfect and crappy, and it will stay that way forever.

the bible doesnt say "no war" per se. no religious text does that.
besides, the monarchs of old were the direct representatives of God so what else could you do but obey when the king proclaims "you there! bent backed and wizened peasant, go to france wearing nought but cloth armour and a blunt scythe and get speared by a dozen swedish mercenaries. i command it!"
people beleived that simply being touched by the monarch could heal you or give you beneficial qualities, this was true for all the monarchies of europe. people were highly superstitious and often dabbled in the occult. so if its war the crown wants, its war theyll get. plus everyone believed that at the time of the crusades simply going on a crusade and declaring your loyalty to god and crown would expunge all of your sins.
The world, people and everything was always imperfect and crappy, and it will stay that way forever.
true.... but i think one day things will be different for sure:)
