depends on wat you want to do
warlocks have minions and can curse stuff and do medium magic damage and can fear
mages dont have minions but have way more magic abilitys and do Huge magic damage
warlocks get free mounts
mages dont
warlocks are great at controlling big groups at higher lvls
mages can one shot kill almost anything with a crit hit
It all depends on wat you want to do I perssonaly find warlocks to get very boring but thats just me.

for pvp i would say warlock because of their massive ability to rip people apart 1v1 mages can be good but id say warlocks are the better 1v1 class plus you can be so many diverse things with a warlock and there are only a few good mage builds
mages-pigeon holed

I'm a Warlock. I DOT.
It is all up to you.
I have an almost 34 Warlock and I've been loving it every time I play. BUT, if I were to make a new character, I would've made a mage. Mages could make free food/water for hp/mp and I think that's awesome.

I have a 40 Mage and a 50 warlock and am glad to share all I have learned
Mages:
*Always high in demand for groups
*Huge damage per spell
*The class with largest range of AoE abilities and can improve these abilities to gives them large crowd control (Blizzard slowing effect)
*Brilliant class for AoE farming, dont kill one at a time. Kill five
*Very Mana dependant but Blizzard gives them the ability to make water and food to make up for thos
*Personal taxi: From level 20 they get their first teleport spell. Eventually they learn to teleport to each major city and create portals for their party members to travel through. This with a hearthstone and maybe engineering (Ultrasafe Transporter for either Gagdetztan or Winterspring) and a mage can go anywhere fast
*Pretty good in PvP - High Damage fast with a lot of instant casts
*Can reduce threat using talents
!!!!!!NOTE!!!!! - I am sure I am forgetting some things - feel free to flame
Warlocks:
*Not as sought after for parties as mage is
*Not high damage per spell, but when you stick on loads of DOTS and start blasting with Shadow Bolt, Death Coil and Soul Fire.
*Dependant upon Soul Shards for many spells - a bother with bags, room etc.
*Can create portals and summon players through it (reverse of mages portals) But requires party of three to complete the ritual
*Has a pet for every situation: Succubus for PvP, Imp For PvE, Voidwalker for soloing
*Can cast soulstone once every half hour, this is like party insurance. If the party all dies in an instance, hopefully the warlock has soulstoned a priest who can then resurrect themselves and then in turn resurrect everyone else. Nice!
*Can create healthstones and hand them out to other party members healing large amounts and does not activate cooldown for potions
*Free mount - Quest is unnecessarily easy at 40 to get mount, havent got the 60 mount yet so cant comment
*Can sacrifice voidwalker to create quite a strong shield, handy for when you need to not get hit for bandages etc.
*Can take out Succubus in instances for crowd control, at cost of the buff the imp gives of stamima.
*Brilliant in PvP because: Can fear an opponent then continue to cast offensive spells on them, Can seduce opponent and continue to cast spells on them, Isnt as tied down as a mage is when trying to get high damage off. Can cast DOTS and bravely run away while opponent gets severely low health and possibly die. Death coil - instant cast high damage spell with heals the caster equal to amount of damage dealt and causes target to run in fear for three seconds. Scenario:
[Warrior] Muhaha die warlock on low health
[Warlock] Screw you hippie
(Casts death coil while bravely running away)
[Warrior] Dammit!
(warriors health goes down, warlocks health goes up and warrior is running in opposite direction for three seconds. Enough time to life tap, turn the gained health into mana and blast that warrior into oblivions (or nearest graveyard)
*Has life tap: Turns health into mana, coupled with Demon Armor (high health regeneration per 5 seconds meaning very low down time)
!!!!NOTE!!!! Again i forget stuff, feel free to flame.
Mages and warlocks are very fun. Both of them have their good points and while playing each class, i miss the spells of the opposite class. IE: I continually try to blink as a warlock and continually try to summon my pet as a mage.

I have never had either of these classes past level 30. However as a 60 warrior I would have to say I fear warlocks alot more than I do mages. Now this could be one of many reasons : Frostnova is a waste of mana for a mage when s/he is using it agenst me because im a gnome and escape artist gets me out of it. Polymorth is all well and good, but intercept and one mortal strike (yes im arms spec due to lack of end game) normaly makes them blink away. At this point the mage has two choices, remain at half life (depending on if s/he is buffed or not) or polymorth me and let me have my life back and we are back to square one. The main reason I dont normaly go for warlocks in pvp is due to fear + dots and succ, they are able to kite me for the most part with out me being able to do a thing. Both of them have there uses, but as a mage id rather sit back out of the range of the melee classes and pump AOE's around. While as a warlock I would single target.
That being said, looking at it from a PvE veiw, I'd have to say mages out damage warlocks.
