Ok, sure, theres some great mmorpgs out there.
But i personally beleive to make a great game, it requires players to be able to get right into it, eg. a short but explanitary tutorial, also killing small chickens at the start amuses no one.
Second, a good mmorpg simply MUST have alot of quests to do, this to keep the players busy, and give them a way to earn gold/items.
For mmorpgs that base alot around different towns/castles, do yourself a favor, dont make 150 npc's and a MASSIVE town, it gets confusing and some people simply quit because of it, you need to keep it small, but not too small, with a few npc's to sell items/give quests.
A good anti-hack program is a MUST, as games such as Knight online, have been completely ruined by macros/hacks.
Ok, making gold has to be difficult, but not too difficult, and leveling, eg. getting .3% per kill at level 20 is just rediculous.
Make sure the GM's and support ACTUALLY support people.
Make the game free 2 play at first, to attract players, then create a pay 2 play option later with more features.
Smooth gameplay is a must, if the character walks around like a demented decapitated cat, no one will play.
Make an easy to understand stats/skill system, as this can make or break a game.
Make a nice variety of character classes, things like theifs mages swordsmen archers barbarians elfs beast masters, etc.
Customisable apearances are always a nice feature.
High level items MUST look cool.
Dont do what runescape did, and make skills such as homemaking and fishing..
PVP (player vs player) combat is a must, people dont like to kill monsters all day, they like to show people how good they are by killing other players. (PVP wars such as world of warcraft, knight online, and turf battles are also very addictive).
Games that involve right clicking a monster, selecting where to attack, and waiting turns to hit a monster ARE EXTREMELY BORING AND NEVER WORK.
Pets can also add a nice feel to a game.
Make attacking simple, have hotkeys for spells, and a simple point and click for attacking.
ALWAYS make sure that all character types are balanced, as having 1 character stronger than all others will end up as a disaster.
Guilds/Clans are defantly needed.
The camera angles cannot be dodgy, make it simple to use/understand.
Make female characters, and certain things to attract people of both genders to the game.
Spells/skills MUST look cool, if a spell called extreme fire simply is a small flame that hits something, it wont work out well.
Make features such as buying a house, getting married, and so on.

Honestly, i could go on all day, but im sick of typing, so ill leave it at that, do with it what you will.

I can only agree 50% what you said. Well yea some games are very ridiculous, But .3% per kill aint that bad. 0.001% per kill, most of the people playing the game are still playing. Like MapleStory, 0.001% per kill at ur high lvls, not sure how high.

Well just to say it isnt that easy to make an mmorpg. Thinking of how much has to be done, years would just be enough for an Open Beta.

yeah, i realise how long it takes to make an mmorpg, and how difficult it is to do, but if you're gonna make one, take the time to make it well.

Good luck making the game, i personally beleive giving game creaters/designers "special advantages" can lead to alot of anoyed players..
Also, i think you wouldnt get halfway through it before getting sewed by the creators of the dungeon keeper series. (using the dungeon keeper logo/character names is illegal).

yea i know that it is illegal (as if bullfrog even exists any more...what company did they change into again??)

Anyway, they abandoned the series of DK when they stopped production of DK3 (by the way i LOVED that old game :))

Anyway, I will change the names of course but while i think of names I thought for now it would be ok just to call it like some other game just while i think :).

Anyway,(dont worry this is the last anyway)I would love to make the game in a year or two but at the moment I am going into the planning stage.

Anyway,DO NOT DOUBLE POST

(oops,I guess I lied about the last anyway)

Anyway,Mmmm who thinks that i should make a seperate topic for this. :D

Edit:I have Changed the name dungeon keepers to "The Ancient Keepers" for copyright reasons ;)
I have also changed the description of the characters playable by the game creators (so it dont say they the strongest)So the only reason they are there is so the players know who created the game which i find very fair :)

The creators obviously can play ALL of the characters that people supporting the game can play.

A good way to avoid something like that is to not have a leveling system. Now, I know this sounds stupid at first, but hear me out.

One way you could do this is like this:
You start out with a certain amount of... we'll call them stat points (probably an already used term, but just ignore that). Now, you have all your normal things: Streangth, Agility, ect. Then, you give them a selection of powers and weapons, and give them a point system for that. We'll call these attack points. You can invest them all into one weapon to make that more powerful, or get a variety. Now, let's say you're making a really expansive game. You can organize the things into groups. For weapons, say, you have middle ages, with bows, swords, maces, shields, ect. Then modern weapons, like rocket launchers (Needs a lot of points), pistols, and those police shield thingies. Then futuristic, with lightsabers, lasers, energy shields, ect. Then for powers you divide them into, say, magic, with spells, energy, with beams and energy balls (I smell supersayans), movement, with flight and flash-like speed, and even force. Now, you make a few middle age villages, cities, and flying metropolisis to give variety (middle ages, modern, futuristic), and then you turn players loose to interact, go on quests, kill each other, ect. Now, there you have it. Cool game. Newbie friendly (they actually have a chance!) and oldie challenging. Add some character customization, and even power and weapon customization (even if only so far as to change the colors) and you have one of the best games in the world. Now you just make ranks (like this: Click the person and you see, say, "Milo has been defeated 468 times, Milo has won 67 times, he is ranked 4678") and you attract a huge player base! Make it in flash and you have THE BEST GAME IN THE WORLD. It wouldn't even need to be 3D.

Anyway, that was long enough. Those of you with flash skill, reading this, I say to you this: I would make every sprite for a game like this if I needed to if only someone could program it

Yea,the biggest problem in ANY game is to have it so players can play it for years and still have something cool and new to do.Making sure the game does not get too repetitive and keep it fun.

It is much easier said than done, many popular games still have trouble with keeping the game world expansive and never ending.

I might try making a few games with this theme, just ones that dont use toooo much programming to do.Just to practise making games and such.
