Folks,

Just surfed on over here from referrals to my website and I was hoping to get a little feedback on a website overhaul I did recently. The site is for a MUD which, being text-based, is a pretty tough sell these days. Especially so with all the beautiful graphical games around :)

It's difficult when you're up against that, but I'm a firm believer that first impressions matter, so I've spent a lot of time redoing the site, and putting in relevant sections for various visitor segmentations.

The site is at http://www.wotmud.org/

In particular, since I suspect many of you might be unfamiliar with MUDs, could I ask, does this page persuade you at all?

http://www.wotmud.org/mud.php

Cheers :)
Nass

In our 15 year experience of running the game, we've come across all sorts of muppets who tried to hack other people's characters. We always catch them (there's a feature against characters to see which IPs have tried to log in as you), but that's why you make sure that passwords arn't easy to guess :)

The website looks nice but I think it is too 'busy'. There are just way too many headings and such with links all over the place.

I always prefer sites that have fewer more organized sections. For instance, in the part where you have 'Play the game with X", "Play the Game with Y", and so on, you could have just made this 1 button called "Play Now" that took you to a page with those options.

Right now the web page is a giant wall of text, but it could be streamlined more to alleviate this.

Think of it if you were to be telling a friend how to navigate the site over the phone. A good site I'd be able to say "click play now on the top left". With this website, I'd have to say something like "Click "play with x" on the left side, sub section c, paragraph z, 2/3 down the page". See what I am sayin?
(I am exaggerating a bit to illustrate my point)

Any way, thats my 2cents.

it sucks. take off the password block thing. here is what it says.

"that word is based of a dictionary WORD" it is supposed to be from a dictionary word. thats why its called a passWORD.

ROFL. You shouldn't use easy words for passwords anyway. Too easy to hack that way. Also, singling out "words" from "passwords" is kinda weak.... numbers and other characters are often used, and recommended to use.

In any event, it should just warn you that your password is weak and not prevent you from using it. Most websites do the warning thing but allow it anyway.

Are you the resident forum troll or something chantzperson ? :)

Anyone with half a brain can do a password which works there, heck even 13 year olds can manage it.

Dunno, I'd like to actually discuss the topic with the others rather than talk about passwords :)

I appreciate MUDs arent exactly hip and trendy, but I wonder whether the homepage helps you non-mudders and makes the thing appeal? Truth is, chantz, I take on board what you're saying about passwords, but the fact that you at tried to log on makes me think that the site itself is sufficiently "persuasive" to prompt you to at least try? you did...

ya. the only reason i clicked on it to play is the BIG ENORMOUS PLAY NOW BUTTONS ON THE SIDE. and how it has all this flashy stuff. thats cool. the only problem is the password thing. who cares if ur character gets hacked. start over.

Cool, guess those big buttons do the job then - that's why I put them there :)

The thing about passwords - some guys play their characters (same character) for 5-10 years... I'm not kidding. To them, it's hugely important - and it'd be pretty crap of us if we didn't protect their (time) investment. The wording could be a lot better though - that whole process of getting to page => playing isn't great

Anyone have a clue where I'd look to submit the MUD as one of the sites in the onrpg directory?
