probably the saddest Anime movie i have ever seen.
The story is about a brother and sister who struggle to survive in WWII era Japan after their mother is killed in an air raid and their father goes off to fight the war.
This is a must see!!!! This movie shows how big of an impact War had on everyone in Japan.
Sad AMV for a sad movie:

While i understood why he took these actions I really think he should of swallowed his pride for his sister at least.

I haven't watched it because I hate movies that play off the sympathy card in cheap settings like war.
They should make a sequel and show the effect the Japanese had on the other countries(China, Philippines, etc) they absolutely raped. THAT would be doubly depressing.
Yet, I guess Americans are the only people that are masochistic and enjoy shaming themselves.
I know Grave of the Fireflies is an anime, but has anyone seen Empire of the Sun? That's a good movie and I'm sure Grave of the Fireflies is a good movie. At least it's mentioned millions of times as a fulfilling, but sad movie.

That movie wasn't directed or written by Miazaki ;) It was directed by Isao Takahata and written by someone else. It was produced by studio ghibli though. I also recommend watching ghibli's "The Cat Returns" as well. Excellent movie.

Yeah this movie was incredibly sad. Although it has a really good story line and the whole time you're rooting for the main characters, even though you know how it's going to end.

I liked the distinct Japanese viewpoint it was told from. Not just the fact that it was set in Japan, but that the characters have very distinct Japanese attitudes and personalities. One of the cools things about watching foreign movies.

So... you haven't watched it because it's a Japanese movie that tells the story of a Japanese pair of children in post-WWII Japan?
There is much more to this movie than just a sympathy play; the characters, the art, and the general storytelling are all phenomenal.

I haven't seen even half of it, but it is still one of the greatest anti-war movies out there.
