There is WarRock (But I'd avoid it now, they took it ***-backwards since the beta days)

There was Phylon which was an RPG-FPS-MMORPG thing, but I eventually lost interest in it due to how hard it was to actually log in (and play for over 30 minutes). That was quite a while back, you might want to check in on that (Go Anuran!!).

Rakion (again a while back, Archer was the demon of that one [Except for vs golems in which ninjas = win]) FPS with levels.

phylon is gone, as for a free alternitive to planetside?
i doubt it can be done, not many games can have assloads of people running around in a realtime twitch shooter.
the server would have to be VERY good, and lets look at the trend of free mmos.
