You can't handle Pukepukes on level 4. Go and try to hunt the blue beasts of level 4 (don't know their name anymore :P ).

have you died recently? if you did then you have to wait until your pxp gets up to 100% before you gain regular exp.

PxP does effect regular exp by not by that much. And if you're partying with someone 19 levels higher than you then you won't get any exp.

Seems some clarifications are in order.

A lvl 4 character killing lvl 4 monsters WILL get experience. I've seen rare cases of low level chars not getting cexp or sexp until they logged out and back in, but that doesn't happen a lot.

There seems to be a recent change, where monsters that are attacking a higher level player will not give exp/drops when killed by a low level player, even if the highlevel never touched the thing.

Monsters also have some "contribution" storage; if you kill a monster from another player you might not get the exp, and the drops might even belong to the previous opponent.

In order to work with an assist, you do not need to be partied. In fact, the easiest way (short of buying) to get the peakyrinds to make a guild is to create a lvl 1 char, buff him up, and go straight to peakyturtles :-)
If you don't care about quests and item drops, this is also the fastest way to get a vagrant to lvl 15.
If you're just protecting one (unpartied) vagrant, just keep him in target for an occasional heal., so not seeing him in the party screen doesn't matter.

When you die, exp and pxp bars will be flashing. You will have lost some exp (3%; slightly less if you've been resurrected), and the exp will be flashing until you have "recovered" the lost experience.
