View Full Version : When are racists jokes taken too far?

Well I was in drafting class this morning working diligently away on my drawings when the teacher had to leave to go to the office to pick up a few things he had ordered for his architecture class. So as soon as he leaves, this one immature prick in our class starts to make really bad racist jokes. The first one or two were pretty funny I'll admit but after that it started become really bland and hateful. So after a really ignorant one about Muslims and stoning, the guy on the far left of me got pissed and let out a pretty rude comment (something along the lines of "Now you wonder why we blow up your buildings") but his timing was probably the worst possible one seeing how the teacher walked in right when he said it.

The Muslim guy got ASD and a call home while the prick went off free.

Now I'm just wondering but, where is the fine line between a joke and something serious?

I only tell racist jokes around people who wouldn't be offended.

The fact that they're racist jokes does not bother me; my point of telling them is not because they're offensive, but because they're funny.

Racist jokes get a lot of bad crap because a lot of people tell them with the intent to offend, not to make people laugh.

It's just about knowing your crowd. Some people are really uptight about even the smallest thing, while others don't give a damn even no matter how far you go.
In the end it's just about measuring the people you're talking to, and be sure to show your real intent.

Just blurting out things without being mindfull of your surroundings is just plain stupid.

I never tell racist jokes. I find them funny but insulting at the same time so I just laugh and move on. But some aren't funny and this guy was just pushing it..

not but seriously, it crosses the line when it isn't funny, when it's just lame and racist, well, it's lame and racist.

So in conclusion, this is what should have happened

Lol @ the fact you identified the hot girl :P.

But yeah, you can tell when somebody is telling a racist joke and when somebody is lowering/disrespecting a race. In this case...well, you know. :/ Some people have no respect for their peers.

Well, in English, or maybe just my school in particular, we have a lot of middle Asian members of the school not just Muslims, but, Sikhs, Hindus and atheists of course.

Now of course, there are people who make jokes about terrorism and other such things, but, as is the way with people, though most are fairly okay with it, they make jokes of their own and go along with things, but, this shouldn't be taken as a template.

Our school is like that too. Majority of the kids are asians and such so the jokes about terrorism (though they get thrown around) they're pretty funny, however, but this one was pretty insulting and had no humor in it what so ever.

There is a big difference between racist jokes and jokes about races.

Racist "jokes" are not jokes, they are comments made by racists with the excuse of "Oh, don't be offended, it's a joke.". Jokes about race are jokes with the intent of humour, but ability to be offensive.

LOL God Hand.
Also, sounds like that Muslim kid didn't tell whoever was in charge that the other kid was making racist jokes. If he had, then the teacher could have asked whoever might have heard him and problem solved.

Nah, we stood up for him but the teach (though he is a cool teach) can't do anything unless he specifically heard it.

It's a really dumb rule.

I dunno what the joke was, I sit in the other side of the room. Had my headphones on listening to some music. All I heard was stoning and muslims.

But I guess that's what it was. Had the other guy pissed though.

I don't really come across racist jokes in real life, but mostly every single person I've spoken to on XFire and told I was black has/usually said something stupid, but I tend not to care, because they are stupid.

Very stupid. And gay.

When I tell people I'm African-American on the internet, they also have something unusual to say, something like:

"WHY DO U TYP WELL I HAVE BLK FREINDS AND DEY TYPE LIKE AHDBAHFAFGAJAGAGA"

Errgh, it pisses me off sometimes.

I want to be part of a minority. :/ Sometimes we caucasians have to take the blame for things that only 1 white dude has done. I'm sure it's much easier for us to handle racism because there are alot of us. I really hate when people disrespect people because of their culture though. Urks me. :P

well youve guys have already summed it up pretty well, racist jokes are ok as long as their purpose is to amuse rather than to insult.

anyone who goes out of their way to insult someone racially should really be asking themselves "what inner failure am i trying to make up for?"

Well, lets bring in an example: I find hian's avatar very offensive.

I wouldn't have said anything, because I do not feel like ruining the fun for him and everything, because I am not in the position to get a laugh out of it.
He might just have no idea how low it is (the randomness just adds to it) and therefore I wouldn't go in and bash my opinion across, because it helps none, besides me, most likely.

However how tasteless the jokes might have been, there isn't a reachable level, after which it's ok, to strike back with the same cheapness and make it a battle of who is the most creative asshole.

That's why i really do not know, if its adequate to sympathise with the Muslim, what he said wasn't really a remark to be proud of and and he might even know and feel that way, but you shouldn't allow yourself such a slip and be mad about possible consequences.

The problem with racist jokes is that they are most fun, when none of the joked upon is present.

It is that funny because it's wrong and we like how we get away with that. It gives us power, to be the bad guy and be able to pull it off and it's probably shameful if it doesn't work.
The conclusion: A racist bully is still a bully, racist jokes are never fun, when they aren't unwillingly funny, but that's a different kind of humour.

Even if they are fun, because they shock us or reveal to much of our personality, they are nothing for the public and a suspicious entertainment in privateness. Still, it can't be really avoided to laugh out of shock, so it is in a way a shame but not as much an insult.

The place where racist jokes are right, are when they are revealing about oneself, not about other races, but that isn't racism.

Racist jokes however are never good at all.

I make jokes about everything, with no intent to offend. I do sometimes expect people to be offended though. Most of the time, when I'm talking with my friends I'll tell them to shut the fuck up in a Duke Nukem voice or something, and they'll know I'm kidding.

If I do say something and people get offended, I'd just say I didn't mean to offend, I only meant to get some laughs. There's a line, but it's hard to see when you're on a roll.

How do you know when a racist joke goes overboard? You can know if it goes overboard when you see brains splat everywhere
