Lol do you? That's the reason I play because it's challenging, but if fighting is all you can do then screw it.

Mines kinda Yes / No

Boring when you have nobody to grind with.
Fun when you have friends with you.

what i seem to like the most is games with lots classes and customisation with faster grind so i can cap more then just 1 character. like shadowbane i was able to cap over 22 characters. ultima online in all my years of playing it have caped over 50 characters.and like WoW pserver was alot funner for me then the real one couse was able to cap every character in the game but it was also good server. when you got long grind yuo feal stuck to 1 style of character. when you can cap alot you get good vareity of gameplay.

I somewhat enjoy grind, but I have to be in the right mindset for it.
I like it when fighting monsters is somewhat fast paced because it kind of makes me notice the grind less. I usually also listen to my own music which can break up the monotony for me.
Grinding with friends definitely makes it more manageable, which is probably why Maplestory is so popular even though it is pretty grindy. Lots of people play it, so it is easier to be able to play with friends to make the grind more fun.

I am Yes/No I love grinding in certain games while in others I cannot stand it. Example, I couldn't stand Maplestory's grind because there was nothing too look forward too then then getting a 'gratz' from your friends but in Rohan I love grinding because I know that next level I get that next skill or I get another quest or unlock mounts or PvP or job change, another example would be I loved PvE in GW(since there is no real grind) too get the really great Elite skills or Gold Max dmg weapon that and the fact that the combat is VERY fast paced.

I like grind when it doesn't require me to move my mouse hand much. In other words, games with select (i.e. tab) and attack (i.e. F1) satisfies me.

I like games with grinding in different ways, in terms of you being able to earn EXP in different subjects like crafting, PvP, etc.

i thought someone has pointed out long time ago
its not the grind that we fear but boring/lack in game content

if the gameplay is good enough you wouldnt mind doing the same thing over and over again as long as you enjoy it

I don't care how long it takes to level in a game as long as the battle system is fun. But i don't like reaching the level cap in less than 100 hours or close to it. my vote for yes.

I can tolerate it. I have played Maple Story for more than 2 years, so yeah, I can tolerate grind. Do I enjoy it? HELLNO. Not anymore; I'm just freaking tired of it. Unless the game offers something to keep me away from the grinding while still enjoying the game features... Anything will do.

All MMO's have some grind but I don't like the ones that have pure grind.

I hate grind, which may be why I don't play many MMORPG's anymore. I lilke FPS's/fighting games, where you can get right into the action, instead of grinding to get to the good parts.

It makes me feel like I'm wasting my life sitting in front of a computer doing the same things over and over in a game just so I can play the better parts of that game.

I'd rather be grinding in real life, like practicing basketball. I always have to feel shitty and guilty when I spend too much time on a game when I could have been practicing my skills.

I say if you're going to grind, do it in real life, not in some game.

Overall, no..but for certain games (for one cabal online) it feels actually worth it to grind and BM1/2+combos/etc. are just amazingly fun...of course I hate the official x1 rates that makes it just too boring for me.

You guys completely missed the point of my post...

The point is that practicing and doing things in real life to achieve a goal is the same as grinding in a game, except in real life it's actually beneficial towards you.

We know what you meant, we were just kidding. Grinding can be beneficial if you are enjoying it; it will help you liberate some stress and put life on pause for a few hours.
Sure, sports will always be more beneficial, can't argue with that.

i like group based grind like lineage II ffxi type stuff

i like aoe group grind most of all cause its fast and people have to actually pay attention

like 2moons dungeons are fast past aoe group grind and phoenix dynasty online was pretty fun grouping in the instances also (i played a priest)

i hated silkroad, of course i played a ice blader on like a 8 level sp gap so it took me ages to level and its way slower then spear/glaive in the 1st place

but on top of takeing forever to kill the monster i had to put my stupid imbue on a hundred times per fight and it would make my fingers hurt

However, in very few cases they actually add some enjoyment to it which makes it actually acceptable.

I hate grinding! well depends how much grind.
most Single player RPG requires no GRIND even though they have LEVELS to gain cuz as you go thru the story, you just level up without realizing it. THAT what a good game would be like especially for a MMORPG.

party grind is better than solo grind in every single way.

Jackyhk
06-22-2008, 08:28 AM
That!.... depends heavily on what kind of grind you are referring. I enjoy PvE that requires cooperations of players (party based) with diversities (different classes being required in a successful party hunt), character skills (most of them, and not just one or two "special later" ones, and a good number of skills), and maybe minor tactics. For the most part, I like PvE over PvP. So.. if the game has all that, it would be a yes. Otherwise, no. Thus therefore, I couldn't vote because it's either just yes or just no. =)

Grinding "shouldn't" be that bad because most RPG, ACT, or FPS games are always about you (the hero) killing the villians (the computer controlled monster, boss, etc.). This fact shouldn't change for MMORPG I believe, except the fact that in MMORPG you also should have the function of PvP is all. One thing most MMORPG really lacks is the fact that their PvE is never as good as or anywhere near PvE in single player games for some reason.

Btw.... Imho the poll should have better options >_>, such as (Yes if it is interesting, Yes if it is party based, etc.) or make one of those multiple selection polls where people can pick the type of grinds they would like or just simply check no if they don't like grinding at all. Just yes or no really doesn't tell us much to be honest =/.

well you must define grind
there grind where you click a mob, click a skill, mob dies, rinse and repeat
then theres questing grind where you clikc an npc the you click accept then repeat
then theres party grind where everyone clicks the mob, mob dies faster, move on to next mob
sadly i hate all three

I voted no although I admit I used to like it and was addicted to the repetitiveness of grind. I grinded my way throughout RO for years and loved it. But I think at some point it grows old...no matter how you try to make it seem fun. Even with friends to talk to while doing it. I think my next game hopefully will have combat so engaging I wont notice the grind (AION...Im looking at you~) But I cant do point and click and lvl, lvl, lvl for the next new shiny thing anymore.

If you mean by just walking around killing monsters with something until you lvl up and get to the fun part, and if it has a good lvling up system, then yes. If you mean by point 'n click, then no, but nothing better is gonna come anytime soon...

Since my first experience with RPGs I discovered I loved to become more powerfull. I loved the "increase with time and effort" idea. That was so addictive. I used to play with my calculator when I was like 8. Pressing 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 and I loved to see those numbers rising! And then, when I reached 100 or so I "bought" the +2 "upgrade". So I would restart from 0 but using 2 + 2 + 2 instead of 1. Then buying + 3 + 4, etc. I also ocasionally cheated too, pressing 22 instead of just 2 sometimes. Yeah!

And I can still remember the first days with Diablo game in my hands and then Diablo II.
Top ten in the ladder. I rediscovered myself playing that shit.
I discovered my determination/will is 1 in a hundred thousand and I was able to translate it very well in all areas of my life. I could play for 18 hours straight without getting tired, without caring about anything else, just doing Cow levels again and again, untill I would get to the 3 hundred Cow level of the day or so. When I got on the university I could finish my Law in just 3 years when the normal is 5 years and half just because I "grinded" my books for 16 hours a day. Nothing but grinding, training, studying, evolution, development. You name it. Hard work, time and effort, thats the secret. Nothing else.

If there is some sort of cap in the game and anyone can reach it in less than 500 hours of grind then I dont care about it. Games for me must have an endless grind or extremelly difficult to level up. The grind has to be meaningfull and rewarding. So that someone who spent 200 hours must OWN 10 guys who spent just 50 hours at the same time, or something to that effect. It doesnt matter how much grind the game has as long as it allow the player to become a God in the game because he spent more time and effort than anyone else. Im an achiever who play to compete. I dont like casual MMORPGs, carebear games. Im an old hardcore gamer that refuse to be extinct. I hate game mechanics where the devs try to "balance" the power of those who spent 500 hours in the game so that the guys who played only 100 hours can compete.

I dont mind grind, but i hate games where i have to sit down for four hours just to get one level. I've been through RO grinding, and i'm done with that

The other issue is, i never have enough time. i can maybe grind for two hours a day before i get called to go chill or session. that and work bugs me down. so games which are insanely grindy just turn me off completely

It depends on how well it's cleverly disguised. I can't grind for the sake of grinding no way. I can easily do a kill 50-100 monsters and you'll get a sweet prize though. Grinding is relaxing but only when there's a definite end to it at some point.

06-23-2008, 11:24 PM
I don't like grind because to me, it can't really be considered grind if it doesn't feel tedious. Grind IMO is tedious by definition. I mean, if it the process of strengthening my character was pure fun, no matter how long the process, I wouldn't call it grinding to begin with.

I mean, if there actually was enough content, in terms of story line, diversity in quests/gameplay element, and a certain immersity and originality to the combat, then I could probably spend months trying to reach top-level etc.

Unfortunately, most mmorpg's lack all the above, and as such, trying to reach a high-level is nothing but a long, useless and extremely boring process.

Negrac

i like the PRE-CU SWG Grid, cause it was basicly like joining a huge chat room, and then killing things that are 3X bigger than you. and you always join a max level's(equivalent) group so when you start out your fighting things level 80(equivalent) when your level 3(equivalent), goes really fast like that.(there is no levels but it the easiest to explain like that)

Never is it Tedious cause your always talking about something different, then the occasional, hey can some one teach me Carbines 4? and a very fun experience. you met alot of people in which would help you though out your time on SWG, it was a very nice community.

Kataal
06-24-2008, 04:27 AM
It depends on the community. If i'm grinding with friends in a game with a nice, talkative community, it can be tons of fun. If the community sucks, the grind sucks.

I had to quote this because I believe it. Theres certain games that ive played that were more dependant on skill than weaponry, where if you where a seasoned player, could outdo a newbie with "leet" gear. These are the games I like. I dont think games that take skill have much grind, because its a learning process. ie monster hunter. Youre so engrossed in the combat most of the time and learning the ropes that it just seems natural. I recall in PSO outdamaging a gal with high level hacked stuff at the same level simply because I knew how to strafe, execute combos, etc etc. To me "grind" is going into a field of look-a-like monsters, clicking and repeating and the person that ends up on top is the one that can put up with it for a long time.

Grind isnt called grind for nothing... It is because ppl dispise killing the same mob over and over for hours and hours, thus it is called grind...
There are other words or phrases to describe grind, "hunting","item finding","kill mobs"...
If you term it "grind" , clearly you dont like it, unless you are talking about those "grind" on the dance floor (not gay bars)...
I like mat/item hunts in Lineage2, might be frustrating at times, but when u finally get enough materials / get the full drops, you get a sense of achievement, at least for awhile...

I like grind sometimes.. if questing has me running or travelling all over the game map, that gets boring also.

What I do is find a place on the map away from people (griefers on pvp server) and try and maximize my killing per hour.

What I normally do is figure out how many mobs I need to kill to level up and get to work...

the thing is pretty much every mmorpg that has been created and published have grind of some extent. whether you like it or not you need to deal with it continuously while you are playing a mmorpg. I guess the reason why some people stop playing mmos and go to console games is this.

though like many people previously said, grind is fun/manageable if you have friends with you, or if you are in an active guild.

I still prefer grind where 10 hours of playing will get you at least good 5 levels regardless of what level range you are in. Hate it when the first 10 levels is very easy and fast to reach and then from then on its like a turtle trying to crawl faster.

My friends once coined the nickname, ADD gamer, for me, because I couldn't tolerate the monotony of grinding for very long and I always ended quitting and moving on to another MMORPG.

Sure, I'll always have those fond memories of playing with friends for countless hours. I don't regret any of those experiences one bit. In fact, I often find that it's not the destination that's truely gratifying, but the journey itself.

Still, having friends tag along shouldn't be a crutch used to improve or justify lackluster gameplay. MMORPGs can be about so much more than mindlessly grinding away towards a temporary sense of satisfaction, but so long as developers keep following the same format and people accept that as the norm, I doubt things will change soon.

There is no shortcuts for anywhere worth going.

There is nothing worthy that dont require grind.

If the destination is not worthy, neither the journey can be.

In the end, it doesnt matter the journey itself if the destination is not worthy. If the destionation is worthy, then the grind was worth it.

I dont care about the grind itself. I care about the power over others that it rewards me. It doesnt matter what I have to do, killing a wolf with a bow for 200.000 times, I dont care about spending 500 hours of my life doing it for as long as doing it allows me to kill everyone in the game in 1 shot for the rest of my gaming experience.

Not many games allows such Godly powers, so the problem is not the grind in itself, but the rewards unworthy of the grind.

Ultima Online (having maxed skills where everyone else had just 30-50%), Ragnarok (having two godly items where I was able to take 5-10 players on my own during raids), RF Online (where I could 1 shot kill everyone with my maxed Acrettia Striker), Metin2 (an imune against stun shield on my high level warrior that allowed me to take 15 players at the same time alone and kill them all), Shadowbane (where I could 1 hit kill everyone with my Rogue Assassin), Conquer Online and Eudemons Online (pretty much the same thing, you can kill own everyone if you work hard up to the hard cap and... spend some money)

Well you guys got the idea, there are many games where Grind does pays off.

I stay away from any games where they try to "balance" the power of hardcore players so the casuals can compete or catch up. Grinding is what separates me from the others, and since thats why I play, I love it.

As long as it's interesting, or has a decent thing waiting at the end, no. Unfortunately, that includes about 1% of MMOs.

I voted for "No" but it kinda depends on the game.
Grinding on some games is actually fun , but grinding on most of them are boring.

Grinding is actually a good in my book, since I get to listen to music that I download and never listen to. Like when I grinded the whole way from 1 to 70 in WoW without doing any quests whatsoever. It was classic.

I enjoy grinding as long as there is something to grind for. *end game content*

If you like it.. Can it really be considered grind?
I thought grinding meant killing mobs repetitively and NOT enjoying it.
Idk :eye:

QFT. If it's grind, you aren't enjoying it. You use a different term for enjoying repeatedly killing monsters to gain exp in a particular game, I think.
