LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71.
Carlin, who had a history of heart and drug-dependency problems, died at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.
Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine called "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television." A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of the routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

my heart sunk when i read the title of this thread, i hoped that it was a joke... now i am sad, I love George Carlin, hes one of the best comedians, and its a shame to see him die. More than a shame, it is Blasphemy!
RIP, I hope you get reborn as a talking ferret, and that i buy you and you can rant about things that important and make them funny.
if he is looking down on us right now... i hope he enjoys the irony(referring to his last HBO special)

Honestly, it depends if he is being foreal about his religion jokes. If he is, then i cannot feel bad for him, cuz that just makes me sick, and he should see this coming anyway. You don't need to bash religion like that...
If hes isn't foreal, then RIP.

Didn't laugh once. The guy is just not funny IMO. But I believe we are all entitled to our own opinions, unlike some of you elitist pricks.

If elitist means, in this case, having more respect for myself to demand more of comedians than running around onstage shouting, spouting jokes no different, better or insightful than the shit I talked about with my own friends...when I was 15, then yeah, I'm elitist. Shoot me.

He is a comedian, he just doesn't rely on being obvious so that "other people" can understand him easier and feel good about themselves. He caters to smarter people.
That's not a diss, it's just a fact. Like Bill Hicks, he didn't rely on "jokes", but that doesn't make him less of a comedian.

Well I don't want you to think that I'm to stupid to get George Carlin. I get what he is trying to say, I just don't find it funny. More like HEY HEY LOOK AT ME I'M SAYING SOMETHING CONTROVERSIAL PLEASE GIVE ME ATTENTION. At least that's what I gathered from his little religion rant and the rape is funny bit. Are at odds. You clearly do not "get" George Carlin. It doesn't necessarily make you stupid, it just means...you don't get George Carlin. Don't sit there saying you do for fear of looking stupid, then confirm you actually don't understand the point of his comedy by making such a baseless and incorrect claim.
Maybe there is more to him than that. I guess you could say the same in a way about Dane Cook with all the running around and shouting he does on stage, but I actually enjoy that.
There's nothing deeper about splicing words together like a little kid and talking about "HEY GUYS! ISN'T IT FUNNY WHEN YOU FIGHT WITH YOUR GIRLFRIEND AND...". That's just like being a teacher in a handicap school, your job is to patronise those people to make them feel involved and equal to people who aren't disabled. He's essentially doing that with his audience.
I'm not saying everyone who likes Dane Cook is an inherently stupid person, I'm just saying that a lot more purely stupid people like him than...better...smarter comedians. You may not be stupid, but I think it's a very shit indication of taste to say you like him, that's all.

Well I wasn't saying Dane Cook was deep I was saying he runs around and acts like an idiot on stage to get attention and laughter, like George Carlin was saying the controversial things to get attention and laughs. It was bad wording on my part I guess. Now maybe you're right, maybe George Carlin is deeper than that. I just don't see how either of the two bits I watched had any hidden, deep meaning. They were pretty straightforward. One was about how religion is bullshit. And one was about rape being funny, and he proceeded to talk about porky the pig, or whatever character he used I don't quite remember, raping elmer fudd or something. I don't see how either of those require any deep thinking to understand. Maybe those are just bad examples of his overall work or maybe you're right, maybe I just don't get it.

It's funny because religion is bullshit, and people who agree like the fact that he came out and said it so blatantly, and in a funny way.
One of the main sources of comedy is making fun of the absurd, especially when the absurd is generally accepted as the norm. Carlin was a master at this. He was not making cheap jokes to about controversial things to get attention - he was taking established traditions and beliefs and coming out and saying "This is fucking bullshit. Here's why." And it is funny to many people. If it is not to you, then fine. I think that fact has been established. Move on, please.
Oh, and to the other guy who said he took his stuff "too far", then let me ask you this - how far is acceptable? How is the acceptable point reached? By consensus? Please. If consensus were a logical and rational way to find "facts," then Nazi Germany was a completely moral country and I don't see why anyone can disagree. The Germans of that time were, after all, generally in consensus that what they were doing was right.

I think it is merely preference when it comes to those two comedians, they have different and unique styles that cater to a specific personality. I don't see why it would be important enough to argue about. George Carlin seemed like that guy who came over drunk at your local BBQ then told hilarious stories & (imo) Dane Cook presents himself as a pretentious asshole during his performances. Honestly I like both of them, I couldn't put one above the other, especially not in a thread that announced he just died today, petty arguments like that should take place elsewhere. R.I.P. George Carlin, he was a great comedian and I'll miss laughing at his controversial jokes.

Honestly, Church/Jesus/religion has helped me change my life toward the better these past few weeks. Come to find out my Ex GF was going through a hard time when she got back from the religious camp( if you remember my topic) and was confused and didnt know what to do, which was why she ignored me. we worked it out yesterday. So she was still ignoring me yesterday, and At church yesterday you could say Jesus talked to me, and gave me the words to say to her and she was open and listened. And we are now friends, and may lead to something. So without Jesus i dont think i would have been able to work this out. I was depressed these past weeks while she ignored me but i feel aton better. So bashing religion is a BULLSHIT thing to do by me. It has helped me turn my life over to Jesus and be a better person, and helps alot of ppl.
cuz i was like drinking and was bout to start smoking, and yelling at parents, and always in a bad mood/depressed state. And really dont want to be like that, so starting to feel better since ive been at church/ accepting Jesus, and turning my life around. Just gonna be automatic DD for friends, cuz i wont be able to stop them from drinking.
If you don't like religion keep it to yourself or buddies, I dont openly bash atheist, i respect them for it and wish them luck. But calling religion bullshit is bullshit its self.
That is the only skit i have a problem with with George Clartin. All his other skits make perfect sense and can respect him for those, but not on the religion one.
And Norrad, why do all your arguments consist of confusing the other person, and then yelling at them about not understanding what you say. Atleast explain your shit, for argument sake. You may be one of the smartest guys here, but you just twist words and confuse ppl.

So basically, it's not ok to express how much you dislike religion, but perfectly fine for you to sit there and type out a long post about how religion has helped you? What makes you think I enjoyed reading that any more than you enjoyed hearing Carlin rip on religion?
Carlin does it because the people who want to hear it are people who share his opinions. If you are secure enough in your decision, and smart enough to just not watch shit you dislike, why is it an issue for you WHAT he says? I don't go to sermons to bitch about how a man in a collar has no right to act like he is any more holy than me or anybody else in the room, I stay away.
Where do you get off? Your post consists of nothing but "HOW DARE YOU BASH RELIGION?! IT HAS HELPED ME!". That's like me saying you shouldn't dare speak positive of it because it has done nothing for me. You're a hypocrite.
Don't get me wrong, here. I'm happy that you have become just another person who has latched onto a set of archaic rules because you've reached a point where you are too lazy to find, define and experience your own, despite not following religion more than a fortnight ago, but really, get lost with that hypocritical bs. His skit isn't nonsense just because you disagree with it, a lot of what he says makes perfect sense. Drop the holier-than-thou act, please.

when did i say they were wrong? i just said i didn't respect him for it because of they way he did it. The way he did it was very disrespectful. IF he would have done it without the bashing and cussing and simply stating what he thought, i would be fine with it.
Ive been in religion for much longer than 2 weeks. I only started to go to a church 2 weeks ago, because i couldn't find one i liked. Im only going to expand my knowledge and learn more about Jesus. I already know much about the Bible and God, but the Church can teach me more.
You say, if we don't like religion, keep it to ourselves. How about keeping your love of it to YOURSELF? Why are we forced to hear it, without being "allowed" to reply with our own feelings?
again, misinterpreted my post. He did it in a disrespectful way. I don't mind atheist, but most try to prove Christians wrong, and are disrespectful in the way they do it. If you want to state your point be respectful atleast. Anyone can turn to "God" and hand their independence and personality over when they don't wanna make choices or deal with shit on their own. Why do you think religious recruits hang around drug clinics? Abortion clinics? They don't hang around unis or colleges much, where people tend to think a lot more.
when did i say they were wrong? i just said i didn't respect him for it because of they way he did it. The way he did it was very disrespectful. IF he would have done it without the bashing and cussing and simply stating what he thought, i would be fine with it.
Why don't you just not watch it? Why don't you ignore it? People are bashing religions extremely right this very second, as well as promoting it to the point of war, at this very second. Just stop watching it if you dislike it, but don't sit there saying he should stop, or anyone should stop. They shouldn't, YOU should stop WATCHING.
Ive been in religion for much longer than 2 weeks. I only started to go to a church 2 weeks ago, because i couldn't find one i liked. Im only going to expand my knowledge and learn more about Jesus. I already know much about the Bible and God, but the Church can teach me more.
Why does it matter where you worship? If you believe there is an omnipotent God, everywhere, then surely you believe he'll talk directly to you, as opposed to through a bunch of glorified secretaries in a special building.
Why can't you teach yourself? The knowledge that priests have is out there in the open world for you to read or study. Why does a man, no more holy than any other human, have to be the one to do it? Do it yourself, retain some independence, man.
again, misinterpreted my post. He did it in a disrespectful way. I don't mind atheist, but most try to prove Christians wrong, and are disrespectful in the way they do it. If you want to state your point be respectful atleast. I try to not be disrespectful, but most ppl here wont care if you are, because if you dont agree with them they bash you, so no point on this forum in trying to be nice and respectful when most ppl wont in return on this forum.
That's fine, but the point is, people will do shit that you will find to be disrespectful, so ignore them and do what you do. Stop watching it.
I hate Big Brother, so I don't watch it.
and again please quote me where I say I'm holier than you?
and again have been religious for more than 2 weeks, just found a decent church to go to 2 weeks ago, and it helped me the first two weeks.

Oh for crying out loud. I said you were LIKE that.
You said it's helped you recently, and now you're openly promoting it and expressing your love of it. Why is George Carlin not allowed to do the opposite? Answer the questions.

well, I'm sorry if i misinterpreted your post. I didn't mean to come off as a religious nut job.
I didn't mean to push my views on you either, I'm not that kind of Christian. Even though i may not agree/understand why someone would think like that, i still respect atheist in general, no matter how disrespectful one person is towards religion. I will only try to teach or convert someone who asks or wants to, becuase you have to change your views before someone else can help you.
i was just saying that religion is helping me, and that bashing it as extremely as he did, i just found disrespectful.
i openly started to go, nobody recruited me, or converted me. I just wanted a better life, and knew i could achieve it with Jesus, which is what He wants. Jesus will always accept you. I can try to explain this but I wont bore you with it.
I dont believe God talks to people through a priest, but to you directly, which is not the reason i go to church.
Because a pastor or priest will have more knowledge and interpretation on the bible and Gods works than i will ever find. And you wont understand what happened to me the past 2 weeks while i was at church, unless you've experienced it yourself, the pastor and sermon + wanting to accept Jesus openly( i accept him in me tho), pretty much broke me down, and you wont understand the rest unless you have been to church and willing to accept. Which is pretty much why i want to keep going.

You still drink and party and stuff? Cause that would be pretty hypocritical if you did. I'm not trying to bash you I'm just wondering.

No i don't, i stopped that when i realized all this. If you read one of my last one i explained it. i wont be able to stop my friends so im just gonna be DD so they dont get hurt or anything, but no drinking /smoking for me.
But i have also made alot of new good friends through this, so it doesnt matter if i cant drink. Im a Senior, and had a 8th grade girl trust me enough to talk to me about something bothering her and i helped her out at church, much better feeling/ life i want than the drinking/partying.

I'm not all that much into organized religion anymore. A local pastor getting busted for kiddie porn and a youth pastor doing lines of coke with some chicks from the youth group kinda has that affect on you.

i cant really respect a man who bashes religion like that, that openly... your entitled to a opinion, but he took it too far for me.
don't be a little Christian boy, he made good points and made them funny, if you can respect that your religion is flawed then you don't have enough faith then do you?

uhhhh.... you said Religion sucks, get over it choir boy...
I understand that you don't like religion, but your intentions where to insult me by saying get over it choir boy(doesn't matter to mean, maybe i am, just the principle). Thats what i mean, ok say religion sucks, do you really need the get over it choir boy? your whole statement put together is disrespectful.
You didn't just say you didn't like religion. I dont say atheist suck, you pricks...
i just say i believe in God, yet you seem to have to try to insult me in the process.
And dont tell me your statement was meant to be taken as a opinion...
and even if i do rant about church or Jesus or God, i don't involve you people or try to force my views on you, i was just sharing how it has helped me, and that religion isn't exactly pointless.

and the Religion comes in becuase that was one of his skits, and pretty much said anyone who believes in God is a idiot and should just die. And im just saying how it has helped me and its not exactly pointless, yet they seem to thing im cramming my views down there throat.

Think of it this way. If everyone on the planet died.. you'd be alone.
Then if you believed in God. If everyone on the planet died, you would be alone, but you would be secure and safe with hope.
Unless you counted on Jesus to help you rather then God.. you'd die.

*sigh* i wont bother with the mistake..
and what does that have to do with anything? i dont want ppl to die, i respect their ideas and views, yet somehow when i say that im an ass and force my views down throats, even tho i never said believing in God was better or that atheist are stupid. Simply stating how it has helped me out,and its not completely useless, gets taken as forcing views on ppl some how, ignorant ppl here, just look for fight to try to prove that God does not exist....

Holy hell, did I start this? I just wanted to make one comment about the irrationality of arguing that free-speech can be taken "too far."
This is a thread to honor George Carlin and wish him well in whatever afterlife he ends up in, whether Heaven, Hell, or the Great Abyss. Any more derailing and I'm warning everyone and closing the thread. Debates about comedians is kind of okay, since he was a comedian himself, but at least try to give the facade that you guys are staying on topic.
If you guys want to argue religion (And honestly, who doesn't?) then start a new thread. I don't think we've had a heated religious debate for, oh, 24 hours, so we're overdue anyway.

God and Jesus aren't the same if that's what your thinking. He's only Gods son because we're all God's children. He's just a special guy that spoke a lot... nothing more, nothing less.

Well, i believe in the Trinity, and that Jesus( Son of God) and God(the Holy Father) are the same person, and according to the Bible will say this a few times.
i might start one lol,
RIP George Carlin, based on your other skits than religion ones.
